Tonight was a strange night. She went to bed with a strangely high number before her bedtime snack (269 at 8:30 PM), so I increased the carb ratio from 1:30 to 1:25, and 3 hours later she was almost 400!!! I had to correct. I'm wondering what is going on. I just increased the basal, and it seemed fine for the last few days, but she's really spiking.

At 8:20 PM she was 269. I gave a peanut butter sandwich snack consisting of 25 carbs (one slice of bread).

At 10:44 PM she ws 344!!!!

At 11:30 PM she was 394 (and I checked twice and her hand was clean).

Usually the peanut butter doesn't have such an effect. I did correct a lunchtime overdose by 1 unit with a 15 gram banana 10 minutes after I gave the overdose. It did cause a small rebound, and kept her numbers higher all day after that. However, this cannot be rebounding, can it?

Yesterday, the numbers were at least 100 to 150 points lower at this time. Ouch!! I have a feeling she had whole milk at the restaurant we went to tonight, even though they said it was 2%. 14 oz of whole milk might have done it. She usually never drinks more than 4 oz of 2% milk at home during a meal. Other than that she had a grilled cheese on two regular size slices of bread (easy to guess the carbs on that one - 40 grams or so).

Ouch!!!

We have this problem too when we go out to dinner. Caleb is always much higher after dinner than I would have thought he should be. We've found this is typically related to how much fat is in the meal. The milk for sure, and maybe the grilled cheese. 40g is a good guess, but I probably would have bolused for an extra 10-15 to account for hidden fat that always seems to be in restaurant food.

Marsha,

You are likely to see higher numbers after restaurant visits.

You may also see higher numbers prior to and during illness.

Or with growth spurts.

I know these numbers are disturbing and alarming to see. Only two months in, you are likely to see oddities for a good while yet. Down the line you will probably be able to identify the reason for any unexpected numbers, if only through personal experience with your daughter's case.

I kinda remember the early days after DX with me being MUCH more jumpy about numbers than I am (most of the time) now. That said, Tom decided after Friday's swim meet that he needed a Fuddrucker's burger (the team went after the meet). It was the unexpected fries that bounced him into the mid 500's. We did not treat with insulin - good thing because he dropped 350 points on his own by the time he woke up. Then last night he went to bed at 329 and woke up at 70. Again, no help from insulin (but we did have wicked good pasta for dinner!)

Point being, you will always see some wonky numbers. I hope in your search for answers you are not blaming yourself for these variations.

Here's hopng the numbers resolve quickly and she spends today in a better range!

She must have been making extra blood sugar all night because I gave her a correction dose of 1.5 units at 11:30 PM, and she still woke up at 269!!! I was expecting a number like 150.

I wasn't as horrified at 269 as I would be at nearly 400. I also think she's coming down with some kind of cold virus to, maybe that's it. When the numbers keep rising and rising like that, regardless of fasting, it tells me that she
1) must be getting sick
2) growth spurt
3) she ate a giant amount of fat

I would suspect the basal, but her numbers were much better the day before, and I don't think she needs more basal.

We had a similar night - three readings in a row in the 400s, and that included 2 corrections. 1 hour later she was 169! We were then afraid of a low!

Oh, are you bolusing for the snack?

High-fat meals seem to really blunt sensitivity to insulin. I'm almost tempted to multiply by 1.2 or something like that, than just add some fixed amount of units.

We've never had a post-restaurant snack, since we don't do night snacks, but definitely take that into account. Or just skip them until you figure out how to eat out without spikes (and tell me when you figure it out!).

Two nights ago, Alex had home-made grilled cheese, plus the usual milk for dinner.

6pm 148; 7pm 112; 8pm 105; 9pm: 270; 11pm 230; 1am 312

No snack. Figure that one out!
