As adults what do you use to treat lows? Juice doesn't seem to raise me up unless I drink 5 cups of it, candy works, but I am sick of it and want to lose weight not gain any LOL

I have tried glucose tabs and they work as well as the juice does

I really need something that works but won't cause me to gain 10 pounds LOL

Please throw some ideas my way...

Well, if glucotabs and juice don't work very well, I don't know if I have any good options.

I really like mini reeses peanut butter cups and chocolate chips ;)

Have you tried regular pudding? Maybe the milk in the pudding would help you stay up?

What about something with honey?

Baked potatos, crackers, chips, will get you up pretty fast, too.

You have such an unusual situation with the crazy dying insulin producing tumor...

Please don't worry about the weight gain -- you HAVE to eat at this point to keep from passing out.

True..weight gain is better than passing out..For now on I will call the tumor the CDIPT (crazy dying insulin producing tumor):D

They believe I have had the tumor for many years and maybe since I was a teen

Go for Pretzels and Coke! While watching tv with one hand in the waistband of your pants, with crumbs all over your boobs...great visual huh? But then when your hubby says some asinine comment, you can say, but I was just copying you...(based on my experience with men, it should be beer, but that won't bring you up!)

Too funny!!! I have never seen my husband sit with one hand in the waistband of his pants.. Beer yes..Maybe he is not normal

Okay I will get some regular soda and see if this helps along with pretzels..

Raisins work well for hypos (and they're healthier than a Coke). They have natural sugar in them, and I always get good results when I'm too low.

Glucose tabs almost NEVER work for me at all, and I have no idea why.

There are two things that work for me everytime: peanut butter and jelly sandwich(es) and pop-tarts.

Pop-Tarts are my nuclear bomb; they're for when nothing else is working.

I broke down and got some pop-tarts and they worked on a stubborn low..Now I have them in the freezer and have told the kids hands off my pop-tarts LOL

Juice no longer works for me, glucose tablets are starting to no longer work..

YMMV to some extent, but a lot of things posted here so far are not possible. Simply Not Possible.

first, Glucose/Dextrose is what your body needs, and eating this sugar, rather than fruit juice/fructose, or pretzels (complex carb), or Soda (HFCS) or pop tarts, or any other form of sugar or carbohydrate will be fastest. To be even faster, you can use one of the "gel" liquid Dextrose products in tubes, they can even get into your bloodstream from under your tongue (without even swallowing, although swallowing is much faster and more effective.)

If you can't choke those tabs down, then you need an alternative. But nothing else is FASTER at turning around a low-- everything else needs some digestion, while Glucose needs only absorption.

Second, some of these tactics are good, even in spite of #1 (above). Each Pop Tart, for example, has almost 40 grams of carbs. So although they're slower, if you can't stand to eat at least 10 Glucose tabs and you've messed up your insulin by a A LOT (i.e., needing more than 40 grams) you should eat something you can stand eating, or maybe even LIKE, rather than giving up after just 5 sugar tabs (and then falling even lower).

Chocolate can't work well for getting out of a Hypo, really. (Chocolate and Peanut Butter are high in fat, not high in sugar.) They can sustain you from falling again, but they won't bring you up.

If you really need FAST recovery, it's gotta be glucose. If you hate the taste and texture of the Dex4 and other tabs you've been buying, try the Wal-Mart Reli-On "Fruit Punch" (NOT mixed tropical fruit flavors, they're mostly horrid, a mix of the same things you already hate (banana, watermelon, pineapple, orange, etc.). "Fruit Punch" is a single flavor.

After my dozens and dozens of years, it's the only one I can stand anymore, really. If I'm dying I'll choke down an orange or two, but I can't do enough of them to solve a "big" problem anymore. Even though I hate Wal-Mart under the greedy heirs that now buy everything from China, I have to shop there for just this one thing.

Well the next time I am standing in the kitchen shaking like a leaf with a 40 BG, I will keep those things in mind. For now, I think I'll stick with what I know works.

So true, there are times when I have woken up low, I can barely get the meter to test. I have glucose tabs and use them when I can, other times I stand in front of the open refrigerator, inhaling anything that I can grab, juice, milk, regular soda, bread till I feel "normal" .

As stated YDMV, the tabs are great if they work for you. They dont always work for others and we do what we can to come out of a low.

I have only had one rebound from doing this and that number was only 180.

If you can keep the sugary substance in your cheek, supposedly it'll absorb faster through the mucus membranes than through the digestive system. Has anyone tried to just keep the glucose tabs, frosting, honey, etc. in the cheek to see if bg comes up faster that way?

Gary S. (Author of How to Think like a Pancreas) says chewing pretzels works fast.

I have tried doing this with honey, glucose jell and cake jell..With my lows doing this is not fast enough, so I would have to either eat everything or hope that I can yell for someone to shoot me with glucagon..Trying to wake up my husband when he is asleep is like trying to wake the dead:rolleyes:

I have used this product. It works pretty well, especially with a low after a meal when you don't really feel like eating anything or drinking much. It's just a little 2 oz. shot.
