my son's pump supplies ship quarterly. last august, the insurance company decided he didn't need to check 9 times a day so they shorted our supply to 7.7 strips per day....

in august i called our MD and asked him to re script my son for at least 8 tests per day, which he gladly did. i called CCS medical to make sure it was all approved for the november shipment; it was.

my son tells me, before Thanksgiving break, that he is really getting low on testing strips ---- oh, no kidding, thanks BlueCross.

i call ccs to see when the november auto ship goes out---it was supposed to hit home while he was home; it never did so no strips. i go to the pharmacy and buy some for him to take back to school....he leaves.

still no ccs shipment. i call and they said "ooops, we thought it shipped, it will ship today" thanks alot.

it was scheduled to be delivered yesterday; i called twice with the tracking number to make sure it was on the way and was told it was on time. (the strips at school are really dwindling now and the weekend is approaching) i wait for the UPS truck at 4PM which gives me one hour to repack the strips and get them to FED EX for overnight to college.

UPS is on our street!!! he spins around our cul-de-sac and goes past my house:eek: all i know now is that i'm running after that truck, full speed ahead, probably 100 yards in thinking to myself "what am i even going to say to him when i stop him"

his "trainee" in the passenger seat sees me running beside the truck and they stop, still on my street.

I told him i hope he has a package for me on that truck somewhere or i'm getting in and riding back to the loading station with him. he goes into the back and comes out with the medical supply box. WHATEVER!!!! i run back to my house, open the box and it's not the correct number, but the "SHORT" number....after 3 months of calls etc, it still isn't right.

i throw the strips in a box, a carepackage, and get it to FEDEX in time for an overnight delivery.

a few things -- God told me to have my shoes on yesterday; i'm normally barefoot in the house but yesterday, i put shoes on in the afternoon.
i'm a runner. i'd have chased that big brown truck for a good 5 miles before i'd broken down.
i know he's 19, but i am still his advocate in this whole thing; i can't imagine where yesterday would have gone had i not been a completely obsessed, nervous, determined mother bear.

today, i'll call ccs. again.

Holy Moly Susan!!! I'll put "chase big brown truck" on my list of 110 reason why I should get off my butt and make it to the gym everyday! LOL! Nothing like an determined mom!

Hope you get it all straightened out with the insurance company. Sometimes I think dealing with insurance is a full time job!

Bravo Susan!!! That is motherly love. Your DS may never know the lengths you will go to make sure he stays on top of his diabetes. I hope he uses every single one. I am inspired!

Way to go Susan!!! Sorry you had and are having insurance frustrations - I find them so stressful.

As I was reading your post I pictured all of us running right there beside you - you know we'd be there in our running shoes if we could -to support you.

Cute you mentioned being a mother bear. I sign my cards sent to college "Mama Bear". :cwds:

thanks everyone! i wanna say that everybody here would have done the exact same thing and probably in less time...it was pure parenting adrenaline! i did manage to tell the driver that it was medical supplies in the box, not an LLBEAN cozy fleece hoody, so he wouldn't have thought i was a total loon.

i really wonder why he didn't stop at my house but i wasn't going to get into that with him, i was just glad to have that box in my hot hands.

What is up with UPS? I encountered several problems with them this summer in delivering my son's insulin. I live in Phoenix, AZ and in the summer it ranges between 105-115 degrees. They had been leaving the insulin out by the garage by the garbage bin, instead of ringing the front door bell and leaving it on the huge front porch. I called the UPS supervisor, as well as Medco, and reemed them a new beginning. They don't even see the "PERISHABLE, RUSH" label. I have waited on them all day, only to see them drop a package down by my garage door and BOLT. So, yea, I am a chaser as well. Track it, call UPS and complain, and speak to your mail order company about your concerns. This is unacceptable!

I'm not defending UPS, but I've had problems with every single company - DHL, USPS, and Fed Ex lately. Maybe it's the gas fumes. I agree - always give them feedback. :)

truthfully, this has been such a saga of miscommunication and jobs not being done properly, on everyone's account, that i don't even have the desire/energy to follow up with UPS as to why he didn't stop when he had the box. i should have been way more proactive in this, i should have started making follow up phone calls in october or early november just to make certain all the little ducks were in a row...but did I? nope:o unfortunately, UPS became the key player cuz time was just running out. it was a real muster cluck on everyone's part (even momma bear!)

but, as we've all done:

so i walk up on high
and i step to the edge
to see my world below
and i laugh at myself,
while the tears roll down
cuz it's the world i know

it's the world we know :cwds:

main thing: he's got his testing strips, he's doing fine, and dang, i never knew i had that in me!!!

W)ell when I decided to take up running this kind of story never crossed my mind. Ran 5 miles for the first time ever in early November after my 50th Bday, and did it once more last Friday(14m for the week). Part of my turning 50 health plan. Now I know I can chase down a UPS truck for my T1 son.
Job description for T1 parents:
To be a T1 parent must have running shoes, negotiating skills, lawyer skills, medical skills, patience, etc.(add on please)

T1Parent must possess: patience, a good deal of faith and hope, love, endurance, tenacity, intelligence, organization skills, a good sense of prioritizing and scheduling, must be a bit of a pharmacist, cde, nurse, lawyer, and a lot of a listener, advocate, and always a friend.

no harsh judgments, self-centeredness, immaturity, or irresponsibility will be tolerated!!:cwds:

go siren~~!! 5 miles:D

running is my sanity.

i'm turning 50 in the summer. part of my "it's only a number" plan is to attempt a triathlon or a full marathon for the first time.

Oh my last UPS drop with my pump supplies we had a "sub" driver and he got sick of "looking for my apt."(when the sign when you come into ALL gates says delivery drivers please check in with the office before walking complex) and left the box that said "Medical Supplies do not delay" at my neighbors house (who happens to hate me and is across the hall from my apt) who opened it and all the box's in the box and I did not want to use any of them) so after calling UPS,Minimed and Tricare I finally got more supplies (3 days after I ran out and had to do shots)
Now we live in a house in a small town and the UPS driver knows were my house is.

Just wanted to chime in. Way to go mama bear!!! :p

Also, I can't tell you how many times that medical supply people want to talk me into also shipping the insulin along with the pump supplies. NOPE, No way in pergatory!!! LOL,,,,no strips and no insulin ever to be shipped to me. I pick up at Walgreens, they have a nice cold fridge that they leave the insulin in up until the time that I walk up to the counter. And the strips for the most part are always in stock! No waiting for them. I do have an issue with only letting me have either Accu-Check drums or the One Touch Ultra strips but not both at the same time. DS has two different meters that he likes equally well and we take turns using them. But other than that, so far so good. Knock on wood!!!
