"I want to see the end of the disease. A lot of people who are arguing about how many fairies can dance on the head of a pin are not people who have had to see the disease close up. It's a terrible disease and i'm on the side of the diabetics". Bob Elliot

thanks ellen, for posting this. i definitely want researchers like him on "our" side. LCT holds some hope for me.

I can't see where JDRF is funding this reasearch at all.

There has been some discussion that all who receive this treatment would not be able to have children because of the fear of spreading the PERV virus from animal to human.

If that is true, would you still allow your child to receive this treatment?

Just curious.

Thanks

Oh my hadn't thought of this!! :( My son is old enough to make this decision on his own, but this makes the situation more complicated.

I think that this is just a requirement for the clinical trial, because the requirement would be unenforceable otherwise. (Not to mention they wouldn't be able to "sell" much of their product with a stipulation like that) They want "healthy" diabetics with no complications (like pregnancy) to make sure the product works the way it should in the average situation, THEN I imagine they would want to try and see how it works in others who may have a few complications or other problems.

We also have to remember what a few mentioned on the other site; porcine insulin, as well as other pig body parts, have been used for many, many years without the virus spreading to people.
