any suggestions on a decent sandwich bread?
everything we tried so far is dryyyyyyyyyy. wow.
someone suggested the Energy Light Tapioca Loaf. that seems to be the best so far, but only if we use it for toast/grilled cheese. still pretty nasty plain.
thanks!!

I don't know of anything that doesn't at least need to be warmed up. We use Sami's Bakery Flax and Millet bread. You can order it online. We get it from our local health food store.

Jessica,

What brands have you tried?
Were they premade loaves or were they from a mix?

For mixes I like:

Manna From Anna (http://www.glutenevolution.com/) - This is probably the best mix. IMHO. It's pricey, but you get a big loaf.

Gluten Free Pantry's Favorite Sandwich Bread Mix (http://www.glutenfree.com/item_detail.aspx?ItemCode=126001M). We use this a lot. It holds up OK. It's best when heated in the wave a bit before eating...or toasted.

Premade loafs:

There's a WI bakery that does bread. It's pretty good. It's called Grandma Ferdon's (http://www.grandmaferdons.com/). Festival Foods carries it.
I like KnK products [sorry, I have trouble spelling it - too many K's, N's and I's ;)].

From Scratch I like:

Yogurt and Honey Quickbread (http://www.celiacforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=5799). Peg just made this for me recently, I'm liking it a lot! It's a great white bread sub. Others have commented on it's good performance at room temp. I freeze mine, so I generally don't think ahead and have to wave it. Allows for lots of experimentation with flavors.

Lorka's Flax Bread (http://www.celiacforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=4986). This is another that Peg makes a lot for me. Very good. Can be a bit dry.

Quinoa Buns (http://www.celiacforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=3209). This is a another favorite of mine! I prefer buns [plus they bake easier than a loaf of bread does]. I'm not sure how a kids palette would like this.

Overall I prefer the from scratch breads. There a much better product.

We use Sami's Millet and Flax as well, but I order a 3 months supply online. It is a little cheaper that way, at least for us. We also use their hot dog and hamburger buns as well as the lavash.

It's amazing. I really dislike most gf breads but their bread is sooo good. It's soft and doesn't crumble like a lot of gf bread.

I just ran into this...http://easyglutenfreebaking.blogspot.com/2007_03_04_archive.html

FYI -- We had an independent lab at the University of Nebraska run gluten testing on products from this bakery.

The acceptable level is no greater than 20 ppm. These products tested greater than 5,000 ppm.

Getting GF bakery items from a non-dedicated bakery is truly a scary proposition. A "local" Bread Smith bakery (http://www.breadsmith.com/) had started making GF bread 1 day a week. I happened to stop in the day before it was GF day, just to see what it was like. The staff hadn't a clue about cross contamination. They had some GF things done, but couldn't tell which items were GF or NGF. They were touching all the products [with glutenated hands]. It was a nightmare. I backed slowly & quietly towards the door...never to return.

For me to be scared - it's bad. I live in a mixed house. I'm GF, wife is not - we have some gluten around in the house.

I agree with gluten free pantry favorite sandwich bread ( I add i tablespoon butter and add flaxmeal and almond flour and do almost 2 cps flour instead of 1 3/4s. Just made a loaf tonight. It really is good and rises well and is moist my daughter loves sandwichs with the left overs I make croutons : )
