I can't believe I did it. I dropped the vial of lantus and it shattered on my tile. The worst part was the real price of it that insurance doesn't pay for. Why don't they put them in plastic containers or unbreakable containers. I am only three months into this, but if I keep this up I am bound to be broke.

Oooh...I'm so sorry! That has to hurt! Hopefully you have great insurance.

Ours is awful...but I guess we're stuck with it!

Don't you wish the had a policy like "dropped ice cream?" Oops, I dropped the vial, can I have a replacement?
I wish they did make the vials in plastic, but I figure it's probably got something to do with how the insulin holds up in different temps. I think glass is more insulating.

:-( I'm sorry. Our insurance covers 80% on most items but out out of pocket expenses are still outrageous. Diabetes certainly is a money-making machine for big pharmaceuticals!!! Very frustrating and financially draining.

ugh thats horrible.. sorry... call your insurance company and tell them what happened, some insureacne will have full replacement coverage for medication... ( i never knew it excisted till my hubby and daughter both broke a vial) hubby broke a few becuase we had them in door of the refirgerator and if we didnt pay attiontion when opeing the door it would splat... I have asked the same thing why cant they put them in shatter proof container like plastic.. its because the insulin starts to break down when placed in plastic, sorry that happened

I've never actually tried this, but I've always thought it would work....

Buy a bottle koozie (sp?), not the big thick kind, but the thin neophrene kind. Measure the circumfrence of the insulin vial, and then cut out the appropriate amount of material (be sure to cut a little extra, say 1/8 of an inch). Now wrap it so that it makes a cylinder shape and sew it shut on the side and on the bottom. You should be able to slide your vial of insulin inside and fold the top portion over the top of the vial. That way if it slips out of the fridge (or out of your hands) the neophrene will absorb most of the impact and keep it from breaking.

If anyone tries this and it works...spread the word.

Nick

By the way, it may be helpful to call A+ Medical Supply at 800-646-8040. They have always accepted what our insurance pays as payment in full. Never had a single co-pay on strips, insulin, pump supplies, glucagon, etc. Good luck!

Did you call Sanofi Aventis ( www.lantus.com (http://www.lantus.com) ) and tell them what happened? Ask if they'll send you a coupon for a free replacement as long as you have the prescription on file. You're bound to be a long-term customer, so it would be in their best interest to provide you with that coupon.

We keep ours on the door in the original box. The paper insert provides a cushion.

I have called the glucose meter co. several times for problems, lost parts, and even a meter that "died" after Meg dropped it on the nurse's office floor one time too many:eek: . I never thought of calling about insulin, though! The school "nurse" (who isn't a nurse) broke 2 bottles of Novolog this year, but I fortunately had spares at home because my endo wrote the Rx for 2 at a time and we were using them slooooowly at first! :) If the new "nurse" breaks one, or we break something at home, I might just do that!:)

We're lucky that diabetes care is free in Ireland.

Very lucky in fact because a few weeks ago Ben's Minimed pump malfunctioned and cut out on us. We had to go back to shots for a while (which was AWFUL) but managed to get it going again.
We got a replacement straight away free of charge.

Ellen, that's a great idea. I was thinking the same thing, especially since they have a competitor [Levimer] now =)
We are fortunate that the state pays for everything since dx. Even Dr. appts. and dentist.

You can always try your endo's office also. They wanted to put Logan on full strength Humalog, instead of giving us a prescription for it they gave us some free samples from the office first to make sure he could handle it.
