Last week under the Thanksgiving Recipe's Thread I mentioned our daughter had a check up with the GI Dr. Her is our story. Sorry it's so long !!!!
Ok back on Oct 1 she had an office visit with the Endo Dr. At that time flu shoots were not in stock. A few weeks ago I knew we had an apt with the GI Doc so I called up there and talked to at least 4 people that day asking when we were up there if they could give her a flu shot. The last one I talked to that day ( Dr’s nurse ) said that shouldn’t be a problem, they would get an order written and get it from the hospital pharmacy. Well when we check into the GI clinic I tell the gal at the window we wanted to get her flu shot while we were there. No problem she tells us, we just started giving them a few weeks ago. Go back and see the Doc, I see you want a flu shot, yes. Well I prefer NOT to give them, you can go to your family dr. and get one. I guess he must of been absent from doctor’s school the day they taught that !!!!! LOL ! Ok now for the visit itself. He pocked her belly and asked if that hurt, no she said. Have you have any symptoms or pain , NO and she NEVER HAD THEM BEFORE EITHER !!!!!!!!!!!! Doc says come back in 4 mths !!!!!!!!!!!!! What no lab work ??????????? no, not been long enough he says !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why the heck did we have to come back then ?????????????????????????
SO later on that day we had to check into the hospital for her insulin pump overnight stay. We met with the pump lady about 90 mins to go over a few things and to put insulin in the pump. We get checked into the hospital and taken up to the room. It’s now about 5:30Pm or so. The hospital has just changed over to this NEW menu and the way you order your food. Its like a motel you call in your order and get what you want . NOW REMEBER THIS IS AN ALL NEW SYSTEM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So the nurse gets us a Gluten Free menu or at least that what she asked for. Katelyn starts looking at it, ahhhhhhh cheese cake, toast, grilled cheese. HMMMMMMMMMMM lets look at that, nope not a GF menu !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I look on the back of the menu and there is a sticky note with her name on it, “Carb Count” and “Gluten FREE” . SO we ask for another menu for GF. Well they sent one up. Looked good and it did say GF on the items it listed. So my wife calls to place the order. The lady picks up and KNOW our daughters name and asked if we were calling from HER Room. My wife said yes. The gal says I see we need carb count and gluten free foods. So the FIRST thing my wife order was roast beef, the gal says YOU CAN’T HAVE THAT , IT’S NON-COMPLIANT, what it’s roast beef??????????? Sorry ! Ok my wife said she will have the sloppy Joe on a gluten free bun ( word for word as to what was on the menu) Well it won’t be on a bun !!! WHAT ??????????????? I’m sorry no bun !!!! Now this goes on like this for a short time. We THOUGHT we had something ordered for her so me and my wife go to get us something to eat down stairs before the kitchen closes, its about 7 PM.
So as we are getting done with OUR meal the nurse calls me on my cell phone and asked if there was anything down there we could buy and bring up for Katelyn to eat ? No I didn’t see to many GF items there she could eat ! Now we are getting a weeeeeeeeee bit ticked off by now ! We get up to the floor the poor nurse was on the phone to the kitchen trying to get something for Katelyn to eat. The kitchen wanted to send up things like pea’s and carrots, uck !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So now I’m about to blow my top. I storm out of there get in the van drive to Wendy’s and get her some food, storm back in there and slam it down on the table ! By now it was 8 PM.
The poor nurse had been making phone calls and even trying to page the dietitian who works with the Celiac kids. Well just our luck this dietitian was teaching a class and wasn’t able to get up to the floor. I didn’t know it at the time but when she got the page she was able to send up some GF snacks that she had in class for samples. After I got the Wendy’s I told my wife I saw a sign down stairs and there was some type of GF class going on and I wanted to see if it was the Dietitian who was working with us, it was so I sat in on the rest of the class and was able to talk to here after to find out what had happened.
Now for breakfast we thought we would out smart the system ! We thought we would order from the Reg menu and get foods we knew were GF. First item was some type of omelet, NOPE the lady says IT’S NON-COMPLIANT !!!!!!!!!!! The lady put us on hold after my wife questioned her and she came back on the phone and said it was approved. So my wife orders the rest of the food and everything came up the way it should of.
Later on the Dietitian came up to the room and wanted to know everything that had happened. She said they were going to have a meeting to find out what went wrong. She tells us that lunch shouldn’t be a problem. We placed our order and it showed up just the way we ordered it. Only one small problem NO CARB COUNT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The poor nurse had to call down and get it !!!!!!!!! The Dietitian came in later to see how lunch went. I told her about the small problem, she didn’t know what to think. She said she was in the kitchen and saw the count on the tray they just didn’t send it up ! She told us later that the people in the kitchen didn’t know where the GF food was or they just didn’t know.
Now in defense of the hospital this was a NEW SYSTEM for everyone !!!!!!!!!! The Dietitian went out of her way to check on us and to make sure our daughter was fed and had snacks. She is a wonderful lady and knows her stuff ! The poor nurse was so worked up over this, she went out of her way to try and help !!!!
She did get her flu shot, the endo doc’s made sure of that !
