Hi there,

I need some advice... I have been diabetic for 4 1/2 years, was diet controlled for a bit, then metformin, now insulin!

Since a severe kidney infection in Feb 06; my BS are very high.. trace ketones if above 30.9mmols..
Have had flank pain since, and heamaturia.... and trace protien..

Now awaiting ultrasound...

If it proves to be nephropathy what is the "usual" treatment?
~
When my BS goes down will I feel better?

-------

Why can't my BS go down! I am taking 30/70 mix twice daily 90u

All treatments come down to the severity of a condition, the patient and the doctor but 'generally' nephropathy is treated with three things.

First being with anti-hypertensives. These lower the blood pressure to help take some pressure off the kidney's. These can also reverse some of the damage, depending on the type and level. If you already have high blood pressure two different anti-hypertensives may be used.

Second is aiming for better blood sugar control to prevent any (further) damage to the smaller blood vessels in the kidney's.

Third would be dietary control, limiting or controlling the amount of salt and/or protein.

I missed the last comment about using mixed insulin. A lot of people struggle to manage their blood sugars adequately on mixed insulin. This is something you should discuss with your doctor.
