Hello folks I am new. I am a type 1.5 pumping with the Animas IR1250. I found this forum when doing some searching. I have a feeling my 12yo is going to be Dx'd soon with diabetes. He has had the signs, thirst, peeing, blurred vision and now starting to loose weight. I kept testing him and his fasting BS would range between 90 and 140. Had him checked last September, had an A1C of 5.1 and was told nothing was wrong. I did a home A1C in April and it was 5.4 (if I remember correct) and had a lab A1C of 5.9 a few weeks ago. All his other test are coming out okay for now. So I have a feeling I am finding this very early.
Well that is about it for now, I am now off to search the forum.

Hi,
You obviously know what to look for, being a 1.5 yourself, but I'd suggest testing him at a different time of, maybe after he's eaten some sugar. My son had very high blood sugar when we tested him at home at about 6 in the morning. By the time we got to the hospital his BGs were normal and the doctors thought we were nuts. But they crept up over the day and glucose showed up in his urine. If we'd only relied on a single fasting test at his normal wake up time diagnosis would've been delayed.
I hope in your case there is another explanation!

Have you asked for a C-Peptide for your son? It could be that he is developing the early signs of T2, not T1. The C-peptide will show if his pancreas is working overtime to keep his BG down. If it is, you may still be able to save a lot of pancreatic function.

Yes they did a C~Peptide and everything came back within Normal Range. I don't have the numbers in front of me, his DR has been on vacation. But was told they are normal. I am hoping to get a copy of the labs later next week.

CPD,
If you want to find out the risk of your son being type 1 you may join the trialnet diabetes trial to look for the antibodies,if you have the elevated antibodies, they do the glucose test where you have to drink orange goo, then with an iv in the arm they check the B/G about every 20 min.
My son has the antibodies, and also shows signs, but they are always normal. We will be retesting him through trialnet in January 2007.
... how were you diagnosed? Did you have the antibodies tests done?
If not, you might want to check for antibodies in your son -- if he has none, I would strongly consider MODY -- 2 generations in a row, slow onset of disease, etc.
TTS, whose childhood diagnosis of type 1 was switched to MODY when her child started coming down with diabetes, and had a very slow onset and no antibodies...

what's a T 1.5?????
The term has been used to mean different things, but currently (when most people say it) means T1 with T2-- your body produces no insulin at all (T1), but also, your cells have insulin resistance (so you need HUGE doses of insulin and/or help from one of the insulin-resistance-lowering drugs).
Those "T2" drugs which work by stimulating the Pancreas to make more insulin do absolutely nothing for a "1.5", because the Pancreas isn't capable of making any insulin at all (and won't respond). Only the "resistance-lowering" drugs can help.

I hope cpd-dispatcher will weigh in on this, but it sounds like he is referring to LADA (which is still referred to as 1.5, just to be confusing), not "double diabetes."
