Abbott Laboratories Refutes Wachovia's Negative Conclusions
posted on: November 12, 2007 | about stocks: ABT
Following an October 11th downgrade of Abbott Laboratories (ABT) to market perform, Wachovia released further negative reports related to Abbott’s Navigator Continuous Glucose Monitor.

Abbott won European regulatory approval for the Navigator Continuous Glucose Monitor in June, but analyst Larry Biegelsen believes Abbott had been unable to sell Navigator, and that the lack of a sale reflects how far behind Medtronic the company has fallen in getting the product to market.

Abbott had an agreement with Insulet to integrate Navigator and Insulet’s OmniPod - a continuous insulin delivery system. Biegelsen believes, “Insulet is pursuing a tie-up of some sort with (DexCom) due to the delays with Navigator.” Beigelsen noted that DexCom has a seven-day sensor while Abbott’s lasts only five days.

Abbott Laboratories said on Thursday that it is not ending its Navigator Continuous Glucose Monitor Program or initiating layoffs in its diabetes division – Biegelsen said in a client note that such actions were in the works.

“The information in the note is completely inaccurate,” Abbott spokeswoman Catherine Bryan said of the Wachovia report. Bryan said the company was planning to launch its Navigator Continuous Glucose Monitoring system in the United States in early 2008.

We have an Abbott rep coming into our diabetes support group meeting on Wednesday. It will be interesting to see what he has to say.

Hmm?

They didn't refute the Insulet thing. Isn't the big hold up still FDA approval? If I recall correctly they were planning on a release in early 2007 and that was frustrating to some because they had kept pushing back the release date.

I appreciate all the new technology. But I felt something was off on the navigator and now I think they are just trying to do damage control in regards to stock prices.

The first Sure Thing Approval date I remember is June 2006!! I'm sure there were dates before that. I decided to stop "waiting for the Navigator" in October 2006 and bought the Dexcom instead. No regrets with that decision :)

Whatever the holdup is, I think Abbott has missed the boat, unfortunately.

I'm thrilled, though, that Insulet is working with Dexcom now!! Only one unit for everything: meter, CGM and pump. Next step... No more insulin (either LCT or Faustman, I don't care which!)

This version, and it hasn't been changed between mid-2006 and now, is unlikely to be approved by the FDA. The problem is not yet resolved, and the fact that the EU is willing to ignore it will not make the FDA do so. It either needs to be fixed/solved, or new studies must show that it "really isn't such a serious problem after all".

On another chat board, someone asked a knowledgeable person "Why?" The answer was one of those looks, "I COULD tell you, but then I'd have to kill you." :D
