The GlucoPhone is an All-In-One product, integrating a commercially available cell phone with a blood glucose monitor making testing "cool and convenient." There is only one device to carry.
Test results are recorded in an online "electronic logbook" eliminating the need for manual log books or synchronization with a computer. The results are accessible to the patient and any other authorized caregiver and healthcare professional they choose.
A text message of the results can be transmitted to anyone the patient authorizes enabling real-time remote monitoring. The GlucoPhone helps minimize the daily hassles associated with the treatment of the disease allowing for better control to reduce its many negative, long-term consequences.

Wellsfamily has one if I'm not mistaken.
No we do not have one, due to the price of the phone. My child being 6, wear and tear, I didn't want to buy a $100 plus cell phone for her. But for $10 bucks- SOLD!

We don't have Verizon so the lady told me we could use the other service. Which was a month to month basis with a cost of $34.99 or something like that. I declined taking the phone. We do have ATT(Cingular) she said they are starting w/ that service in Jan. But we would not be able to use this phone at that time.

Couldn't you just get the phone now and hook it up after they start using your service provider? So for example get the phone now, put it on a shelf, check back in April and find out they now are available through your network, take the phone in and get it hooked up under your plan.

$10 for 50 strips? That sounds way too good to be true. I feel like I've gotta be missing something here. Is there a subscription fee or something?
Tori's Mom
11-12-2007, 11:06 PM
As far as anything I've been able to find there is not a subscription fee for the phone itself. But, you will have to activate another line on your verizon account which is usually $10 a month if you have a family plan. I was told you would also have to subscribe to mobile web for $5/month. I know, I thought the same about the strips--50 for $10=too good to be true.
No matter what, I feel it is worth a try for us. Tori is 7 and I see it as being invaluable as she gets maybe a year or 2 older and wants more independence. Can't wait to get it and am hoping it is as good as it sounds. Hopefully the glucometer on it will be accurate!!

When I asked Debbi she said that the only monthy costs are going to be to our cell phone provider for the extra line and for test strips. Seriously, now much do you think it costs to make a test strip? Somehow I doubt it costs $1 per strip to manufacture, my guess is they are charging very little over actual cost to get the product out there, Debbi has stated several times that the price will go up after the glucophone is fully launched nationwide and they start to work with insurance companies.

just one more question.. if you get this. .and say we signed a new contract.. and got an verizon service.. it will only send to verizon phones.. correct? if I could set it up so it would be able text my phone I would get this for K and get the cheepest plan to get this going.. but I"m not sure how I'd get the number.. I'd want it strictly for when she's at my parents, or with someone.. or at school..

It will send to any phone but you will have to pay the per text fee. For example we have verizon cell phones with unlimited v to v text messages so we do not pay but if I wanted it sent to my dad's cell I would have to pay the per txt fee for those.

Kim- just to be sure, I would call Debbie Gross.
Anyone can text someone from cell phone to cell phone. My Mom doesn't have a texting cell plan, but I can still send her a text, she can send me a text, but it costs HER extra each time you send and receive a message (I think it's 10 cents). It doesn't cost me extra because I have Verizon and she has Verizon, and I pay for a text plan on my cell phone. The catch to this is the software- I don't know if they just need the Glucophone to be Verizon, and yours doesn't have to?!
My thought is to get one, stick it in the closet, and if you use it great, if not, maybe you can help someone else out sometime?! You can't buy a LG cell phone for $10 dollars.

Hey here's an idea!
What if you just called a toll free number, enrolled in a program and the device showed up at your home in a box and you opened it up and you put your high quality meter with the already reimbursed high quality (small sample size) test strips in the new wireless device that just works because it is already setup for you on a nationwide wireless network and it just works?
Your incremental cost would be $30 over what you pay already for test strips and no new charges from your wireless carrier.
Would that be interesting?

Can you carry the wireless device with you wherever you go? I liked the concept of your meter device but my daughter is VERY mobile between school with 6 teachers, activities, and friends. From what I understand your system is stationary and would require the child to go plug it in to get it to work. I did look into your system also and found it intriguing (sp?) but it seemed that it would mean taking more with her not less. I like our Onetouch but the concept of a cellphone/meter in one is nice because it makes one less thing that Hailey has to take with her. She already carries a cell phone because I manage all of her diabetes care with pretty much no help from the school. What would the $30 be for?
ETA: Our insurance has already agreed to pay for the strips and I am working with A+ to get them through them like I do with all of our other D supplies. They just need to verify that our insurance is going to pay for them, from what I understand.

Good clarification to my questions!
Would you prefer a mobile version of the wireless device that comes in the box all setup and ready to go or would you prefer one that typically stays in one place but is small enough to be moved around from time to time? There are pros and cons to each design depending on the patient.
We actually have 5 different wireless devices - some are mobile with rechargeable batteries and some are designed for the counter top. Most of our published research comes from users of the VERY mobile versions of the GlucoMON.
Don't forget that you have to do something with test strips, replacement lancets, glucose/sucrose for treating lows, alcohol/clean wipes, gel, glucagon, etc... Also, any new transmission features will add size/bulk to either the meter or the phone depending on where the transmission technology lives. Should that bulk be tied to the meter or could it be a temporary add-on only when you need it?
As a community, what do you all want us manufacturers to build??? Your feedback is much more effective than silence ;)
Regarding what you should get for the $30 question: Yes, it is possible to take profits from the sale of test strips to cover some of these new innovations but there are limits. Keep in mind that this category of innovation requires devices, software development on the devices, airtime to transport the data, infrastructure costs to store and manage the data, software development on the remote servers, costs to comply with regulatory oversight and good manufacturing practices plus quite a few more costs to make sure that it works and that it's easy for the patient and anyone involved with these systems. Obviously, the more patients using these innovations the lower the per patient cost to a point. Conversely, the fewer the number of patients the more these things cost per patient.
Also, is anyone willing to pay out of pocket for these types of features or is this just an exercise of waiting until insurance covers it?
I'm just asking for some feedback that would be helpful for anyone thinking about developing these innovations.

Mobile is a must in our situation.
We actually have 5 different wireless devices - some are mobile with rechargeable batteries and some are designed for the counter top. Most of our published research comes from users of the VERY mobile versions of the GlucoMON.
I looked into the text messaging system and would pay the $199 up front but the monthly fee after that becomes a burden, if there was a way to get insurance to cover this I am certain that we would look more closely.
Don't forget that you have to do something with test strips, replacement lancets, glucose/sucrose for treating lows, alcohol/clean wipes, gel, glucagon, etc... The bulk is not much of a problem, I am trying to make communications easier. Hailey still has to take all of her supplies with her but this way she would not have to text me with every number, it would be automatic and then I could text her back if there is something that she needs to do. Plus it would correct some of the "I forgot to txt sorry" that I get once and a while.
As a community, what do you all want us manufacturers to build??? Your feedback is much more effective than silence ;)
*I* want a cell phone that takes bg and automatically sends me a txt message with that number. I want it to come in real time so my child is not sitting around waiting for instructions. I want to be able to send a text back to her telling her what to do with a number. I want it to be fairly inexpensive or covered by insurance. It would be great if the phone were cool looking ;) I want it to come with a carry pouch to attach it to jeans/pump belt. I want the phone to work with verizon since we are already with them.

I hope you didn't misunderstand me, I was just wondering what the $30 monthly fee was paying for. I understand the need to make money. Unfortunatly alot of us cannot afford another fee. If your company could find a way to get insurance to cover your systems I am certain that ALOT of us would be jumping on board.
Also, is anyone willing to pay out of pocket for these types of features or is this just an exercise of waiting until insurance covers it?
I would be willing to pay out of pocket once, for example for a phone or texting device. Unfortunatly with the cost (as I am sure you know) of taking care of our kid's D keeps most of us looking at a way to decrease monthly expenses.
I'm just asking for some feedback that would be helpful for anyone thinking about developing these innovations.
I love to give feedback ;) sometimes too much if you ask my dh LOL. Please feel free to ask away! All of us have our own ideas of what would work best for us. Hopefully more than just I will chime in with a wish list.
I think the reason that this phone is such a draw is because it works with a cell phone that we already have or can add for $10-$20 a month that our child can use for more than just sending a number. The expense for us would not be any more than we are already paying since our insurance will pay for test strips (as I believe all do) If I were having to pay another fee for using thier service I would not be able to justify the extra expense and would continue to have Hailey manually text mer her number every time.

So it sounds to me like you aren't thinking about the phone charges as diabetes cost but more of a non-diabetes family cost of communicating with your child? That's interesting to know how everyone thinks about these different costs and which buckets they get put into as part of the family budget.

No, in our case we are already using a cell phone as part of diabetes care therefore it is a diabetes cost and in OUR case a must since I manage all of Hailey's diabetes care, while at school, through text messaging. I would prefer to have insurance cover this but I KNOW that is not going to happen  I guess my point is we already have to pay for cell phone service and I do not want to add another fee onto what we are already paying. I know that insurance will cover test strips. If I were to try to get them to cover a service I am certain that I would have a much bigger battle on my hands.
I need to know what Hailey's numbers are since there is no one at the school helping her. With the use of the cell phone text messaging we are able to communicate both with her sending me the number and me sending her instructions. The reason the glucophone was such a draw for me is that it removes a full step for Hailey therefore reducing missed class time, it ensures that she no longer "forgets" to send me a number, and it still allows me to send her instructions (doing all of this from her seat in the classroom).

Our tax lady says yes but double check with yours.
I have in our 504 that Hailey is allowed to keep her cell phone on her at all times and it is only to be used for treatment purposes. There are no cells allowed in Hailey's school either but they made an exception for her :cwds:

I tried several times last week to get one, but I kept getting a recording they were busy and would call back.
I just called and got one ordered. Jess is only 6, but it she goes to her grandparents house for a week inthe summer, so this will be great for her to use then. We already have verizon so it shouldnt be a huge expense to add the line.

I am still experimenting with it. We got one and my dad bought one as a back up and the one recieved was pretty far off on the highs so on a hunch I tried the pack that dad got and it has been 10-20 points off so really not bad considering all meters have that 10% range. I still have been having Hailey use both meters until I am confident in the numbers I get out of the phone. 1 day I did not get txts until the end of the day and I have contacted the company about it and they are looking into it. If it continues to not give me numbers at the exact time she tests then I won't be able to use it since I do all of Hailey's treatment via text while at school. 1 days out of 6 isn't bad if they can fix whatever happened, the days was Thanksgiving so they possibly could have had a glitch while everyone was out of the office.
