I believe that the sale and production of inhaled insulin has been stopped.

Its not being made anymore. Can you believe that Pfizer spent 5 BILLION US dollars on it, only to have it pulled from the market due to weak sales. Imagine- that money could've been spent finding a cure. That makes me so mad.

I would never have used it anyway. First of all the inhaler was HUGE and it looked like a bong. Imagine carrying that around with you everywhere to bolus for meals. It would not have fit in my handbag. No-one knew what the long term effects on the lungs would be. Too much of a risk IMO. You still needed a shot of Lantus for basal. And how could the dose have been accurate? What if you sneezed?

A slight correction -- Pfizer reported a $2.8 billion charge, including writing off $661 million in Exubera inventory. I don't know if they said that was how much they had spent on acquiring the rights to Exubera though.

I've never thought this particular product would be successful. Other inhaled insulins have a smaller inhaler, similar in size to an asthma inhaler. Those might fare better.

I went to a research briefing about a year or so ago and the researcher/scientist said he wouldn't even let his own son try it because he thought it would cause lung damage.

I would have loved to try Exubera. I heard only good things from the people who did (well, except for the cost and insurance not paying:rolleyes:) There's a clinical study for a not yet on the market inhaled insulin starting near me soon, and I'm hoping to try it. It would be awesome to cut down on shots, try a new product, and not have to pay for it.

RIP Exubera

I blogged my opinion in January 2006
