Yesterday I heard someone say that giving too much insulin can damage the kidneys ! Does anyone know how true this statement is ? My heart sank when I heard this because I feel it might be true. Maybe by obeying doctors rules we are harming out kids? I think we are all still going through an experimental phase with this T1 treatment .

think about it for a minute - you're only giving insulin that the body needs, nothing more than a healthy body does. Does it damage kidneys in the general population?

I always thought giving too little insulin will damage kidneys. The kidneys job is basically a filter  the glucose that wasn't converted with sufficient insulin is causing the kidney's to work overtime.

Unless that someone has an MD or PhD after their name I would automatically reject their opinion. If they do have an MD or PhD after their name I would still critically judge their opinion. Sometimes even 'reputable' doctors write books or articles with 'scary' or 'controversial' titles simply to get published or sell more.

That's exactly correct.
The insulin takes care of the glucose so the kidneys don't have to.
Just another reason to keep BG under control!

Here's a good link. http://www.kidney.org/ATOZ/pdf/diabetes.pdf
In it, they talk about the body requiring LESS insulin when the kidneys are damaged, because the kidneys aren't able to break down the insulin as well.

What you heard yesterday was the exact OPPOSITE of the truth - it was blatantly false, so you should discount anything that the fool you heard this from says in the future.

If our Type 1 kids get too little insulin and BG is chronically too high, then the inevitable outcome will be complications including kidney damage. This is a proven fact, there is nothing experimental about it.
I can give you references from any number of books if that would be helpful.

UUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!
You have to make up your mind, RIGHT NOW, and know that 95% of the general population do not know what they are talking about when they "offer" their comments about Diabetes and about Type 1 in particular.
I HATE that these people are able to cause this much emotional turmoil and stress to someone by making simple comment.
DO NOT STRESS OR BELIEVE EVERYTHING PEOPLE SAY.....COME HERE OR TO YOUR ENDO FOR THE REAL STORY.

The kidney is like cheesecloth, a big osmosis filter. Either way, if the BS is too high or too low, it damages the kidneys. Too much sugar and it has to push sugar thru a filtering system made for water. Too low, it has to push protein thru the same thing. Internal skin cells on the kidney regenerate with everything else, but scarring happens. To be honest, nondiabetics get the same problems if they drink soda, tea, citrus fruits, eat candy, smoke, drink alcohol (even if they are not drunks), take certain medications over the counter, or eat processed, previously dehydrated foods. If you dig too deep into thinking about this you can get down right depressed, and it wouldnt help matters. If your worried about the kidneys, the best thing to do is just "water". :cwds: Its natures flush. Its very healing. Insulin is saving your childs life, bettering his/her quality of life. Without it, think what the kidneys would look like. Not pretty.

I heard that this thursday from a t2 diabetic on insulin whose blood sugars are in the 300s constantly and I was very sad. Having high blood sugar damages kidneys.
Insulin is mildly carcinogenic.
