Help. I love the ease of the pump and not having to inject Adin countless times but he hates pod change, his numbers are still crazy and there seems to be so many possible factors effecting everything. I now know why people want to throw the darn pump out the window. I was hoping once we were on the pump for a month things wouldn't be so erratic. :( He is still bouncing anywhere from 80, 200, 400, 300, 500 and that is just in one day. I feel so bad for my little guy.
I am getting ready to fax over numbers to our Endo for her advice. I value her opinion.
In the meantime, would you all be kind enough to post your child's I:C ratios, ISF's, and what you have the insulin duration set at. Especially if you have a little one on the pump. I know YDMV. I was just hoping to be able to see various info because at this point in time I don't think I see the bigger picture.
As always thanks for your support.

Keep in mind that she is 9. We have the added challenge of 50% at Mom's and 50% at Dad's. Trying to keep her in range used to drive me crazy because for some reason she needs more insulin at my house, even though same activity levels, sleep, etc. I chalk it up to different measuring techniques - I use a scale and they use measuring Cups...so I know there has to be some difference. But that is the beauty of the pump - we each have our own Basals and she is SO in range with me right now (uh oh - I am sure I just jinxed it!)

Breathe, I know it's hard. I have SO BEEN THERE. I don't know if you've recalled some of my pump rants? I promise it will get better. I'll PM you in a little bit.
One thing I can tell you hands down that has dramatically changed Abby's numbers without a doubt is PRE BOLUSING. You've just got to get that insulin in there before the food- of course with pasta that might be a different story.

Her duration is set at 4 hours, although I think it's 3 1/2 sometimes depending on what's she's ate???
Abby is 6 years old. She is 47 inches and 47 pounds.

We had higher numbers post pod change until he was 3 (we still see it occassionally if we do a late pod change.), if he was really high at pod change time we would often correct by injection (novopen jr) before pod change.

I have a 2 year old on Animas:
Our ratios are:
Breakfast - 1:12
Lunch - 1:22
Dinner - 1:20
ISF: 225 (has been since diagnosis)
IOB length - 5 hours (we had observed that even on shots but for breakfast and especially for lunch, the Humalog seems to have effectiveness between 4 and 5 hours). Dinner is usually a shorter effectiveness but we don't have that option so we just make mental notes if we have to correct after dinner
Our basal rates:
12:00am - 0.125
4:00am - 0.075
11:00am - 0.2
4:00pm - 0.1
8pm - 0.25
And, when she naps, we increase her basal by 20%, so that .2 at 11am becomes .24 from usually about 12:30pm - 3:30pm each afternoon.
Her TDD is right around 10 units right now - an average meal is in the 30g carbs

My son is a LOT older so it wouldn't even make sense for me to put his numbers down.
But our IOB length is 2 hours. I think it is really individual for some reason.

The beginning stages of the pump are hard..it took us a good 6months to get things 'right'.. and then they'd change anyway.. it took us almost a year before we got nightime numbers right..
here is Kaylee's info

Thanks everyone. :cwds: Seeing the numbers help.
Adin is running High again. I cant get him down past 400 yet today, no ketones. But I used my last strip, the pharmacy has to order more and they are looking to see if they have Ketostix. I suspended the pump and given an injection an hour ago. He is in good spirits but I hope we aren't in for another type of illness. He has had 3 illnesses since pump start no wonder I can't get it figured out.

Insteead of suspending the pump, why not run a temp basal of 150 %. I nomrally start at 110% but if he was that hi then I would go up more.
What are his basals set up and are you seeing thrends to the highs and lows.? Activity level causing any lows? certain foods?
We normally get a good level for about 1 week before I have to change all settings again.
Our carb ratio is brkft 1:12
lunch 1:15
dinner 1:15
midnight-2am 0.35
till 8am 0.30
till 11:00am 0.35
till 2pm 0.25
till 8pm 0.20
till midnight 0.25
We do not have any problems with pod changes. My daughter showers right befor echange and that softens it up a lot. Then we still will use detachol or one of the removers to detach it even better. We sing during them to lessen the clicking sound.
My daughter is a very petite 8 year old. She finally weighs 49lbs.
Good luck and 1 month is no time. Hang in there, it does get better. But try your temp basal. It has worked wonders for us with activity and highs.

I always give lunch and dinner boluses as dual waves, or she bottoms out 1-1/2 hours after eating then rises.
Duration is 4 hours. Gary Scheiner (Think Like a Pancreas) advised DH not to mess with this much as it could really screw you up in setting your basals correctly. Small children could be 5 or 6 hours, even.
Good luck!! We've been there. DD's pump start was quite rocky. Hang in there! It's worth it.:)

When Julia is sick we have to at least double her insulin intake. If you've already ruled out problems with the pump I'd suggest doing at least a 50% temp basal rate and adding maybe 10-30% to his correction so you can possibly get him down a little bit, and with the basals hopefully keep him down.
