Diet lemon drink taken off shelves

By Louise Hogan
13 June 2006 Soft drinks manufacturer Club has withdrawn its Diet Lemon drink from the Irish market after high levels of a chemical were detected in it.
Food Safety bosses said a survey found Club Diet Lemon and Rose's Diabetic Squash Concentrate had levels of benzene of over 10 parts per billion (ppb). The companies have voluntarily removed the products from sale.
Benzene is a chemical which is also found in the environment and has cancer-causing properties.
Dr Iona Pratt, chief specialist in toxicology with the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), said: "The whole range of Diet Club Lemon was withdrawn by the manufacturer, they voluntarily suspended production and are looking at the ingredients.
"The bottle we purchased was beyond its sell by date and it was a combination of the length of time it had been on the shelves and ingredients. There is a problem in relation to Diet Club Lemon getting near the end of its shelf life."
