Run into two this week:
neighbor: you know they have a cure for diabetes (giving me the look like why aren't you using this cure?)
me: really, what is it
neighbor: I don't know but I read about it
me: let me guess, they cured diabetic mice
neighbor: yes, that's it
me: does Tony look like a mouse?
neighbor: gahh ummm (changes subject)
know it all on a message board:
K.I.A.:Someone with untreated diabetes does not necessarily die immediately. Actually, there are about 200,000 people walking around the U.S. right now who have diabetes but don't have a formal diagnosis.
someone else chimes in that's not true all the time
K.I.A.: Actually, about 10% of the the undiagnosed diabetic population has type 1 diabetes. And I really lowballed my guess. A little over 6 million people are walking around with undiagnosed diabetes. That's horrid.
But it's not like you go to bed on Tuesday, wake up with type 1 diabetes mellitus, and are dead by lunch on Wednesday. There's a stretch there where all kinds of things can go wrong with the human body before death occurs. We're actually pretty weird beings.

I had a run in last week also. I made a trip up to the junior high to drop off my older son's glasses, and I went to the nurse's office to check on his shots (I know he needs something). We kinda know the nurse through acquaintances, and she asked how Brandon was doing? He just had his checkup, so I told her how it went and that the endo approved us for a pump whenever we were ready.
THEN, she starts to tell me how the pump can be both good and bad. That at the junior high age, unless you are on top of them, they might use it to their advantage. I was thinking she was talking about using the beeps to get out of class, not bolusing when needed, whatever, but NO. She continued by saying that she has watched kids with pumps just continue to eat and eat, sometimes junk food, and just keep pushing buttons for more insulin.
I honestly didn't know what to say for a second, my jaw dropped, and I finally snapped out of it and just looked at her like she was a NUT, and told her that was what the pump was for. THEN she starts to say something about still needing to maintain a "diabetic..." Before she could even get the word DIET out of her mouth, I told her that Brandon could eat a whole tub of ice cream if he wanted as long as he took the insulin for it. AND that if he did decide to eat a tub of ice cream I would jump for joy since he needs to put on some weight.
She just kept this smile plastered on her face like she was thinking I didn't know what I was talking about. He's only in first grade, but please let her be retired before he gets to junior high!

What you all are saying is very true. Seems like the people on this board are really careful and take care of their bodies. My son's ped said to me the other day that there is a real problem with some teens with pumps who have type one and eat and eat and give insulin to cover. They gain weight and get insulin resistant and well as having type one.
I know people here aren't going to do this and teens should be able to eat lots and have good control at the same time. There are people who are going to abuse things that can make life so much easier.
Just another perspective. Don't hate me ;)

I kinda don't think this is a D or non-D issue though - or pancreas or pump thing ya know?
So was the ped saying if you eat too much (whatever that is - become overweight) and cover the insulin, you will become insulin resistant - is this correct???
