Elliott Yamin is going to perform at the World Diabetes Day at the UN in New York. There are 14 kids singing with him and guess what - Jenny is one of them. She is so excited to meet him!!
Everybody who is from the area should come down and join us!

We will be there. I am actually the one in charge of organizing our chapter's trip up there. There should hopefully be about 45 of us from S Jersey coming. My babysitter, Emily, is also singing. Our JDRF director asked if I had any suggestions, so I gave her name. She is great (also Type1) Since Aidan is too little, they said maybe they would arrange for a picture w/ him. I'll take it :)

I'd be interested in some details of what is going on - if anyone knows them. DH works in NYC. I would have to bring both kids, which could be a challenge, but I might be up for it if it timing works.
Thanks!

that is so cool that some of you are coming, we all should meet some how????!!!! Like a CWD meeting point.
The ceremony is supposed to be around 10:30 am.
As soon as I know more details I will post it here.
I'll see if they allow us to tape it, or if they will give us a tape from the event.

I emailed the contact and received some wonderful info this morning. I am trying to work out some logistics for getting there with two kids. I'd be interested in meeting up with fellow-CWDers. :cwds:

Cammy- where in NJ are you? There is still room on our bus if you can get to Cherry Hill by 7:15 am. Let me know as soon as possible as space is filling up. The bus is paid for, so you would just have to show up :)
Also, LOVE the name Ainsley.

Heather - thanks - I'm in West Orange -- about 15 miles from NYC. I'd be doing a bit of back tracking :)

Okay - just talked to DH and I think we are going to go -- as he said this would be far more meaningful than taking Christmas Eve as a vacation day for him (we would just be home as our family is all out of state) and our plans are all in the evening.
Below is a copy and paste of the info I received this morning:
Join us in NEW YORK for the first UN World Diabetes Day
Human Blue Circle - 11:00 am
Public gathering on the lawn of the UN. Participants will form a blue circle while holding blue umbrellas, representing the global symbol for diabetes. Depending on the number of participants, we may organize more than one circle as the Rose Garden has 2 small lawns that could accommodate approximately 350 people to form each circle. Umbrellas and Blue Circle T-shirts will be given to the first 700 participants. A few words will be said by a representative of the Bangladesh Mission and a representative from IDF. Elliott Yamin (American Idol) will sing a song joined by a chorus of children with diabetes.
Please note: All participants must pass through UN Security. This may take some time and we advise arriving early. Security is aware of the needs of people with diabetes. There will not be places to sit after entering the UN Security and appropriate attire and comfortable shoes should be worn. Weather conditions may not be favorable in November. The good news is we will have umbrellas!
246 Step March - 11:40 am
Public march up First Avenue, each step representing one million people with diabetes.
The City of NY has suggested that we depart the UN grounds in groups of 30-40 and walk along the wide sidewalk 9 blocks to Guastavino’s. UN Security will guide the groups as we leave the UN. We will have volunteers assisting at cross walks and directing people along the way. A few of New York’s Finest (bagpipes and drummers) will lead the procession.
Diabetes Education Rally - Noon to 3:00 pm
Guastavino’s is located at 409 E. 59th Street (under the 59th St Bridge)
Mistress of Ceremonies, B. Smith (restaurateur, television host, author, entrepreneur and entertainer) will lead the crowd in an inspirational, educational event. Celebrities and diabetes heroes will teach and entertain, supporting partners and organizations will provide diabetes education and social responsibility programs developed in response to the UN Resolution. A public call-to-action will highlight the words of Martin Luther King “Each one, reach one, teach one”, asking each person to share their new diabetes knowledge with someone else and help reach one billion people.
Take Time for Diabetes
The Rally site promises to be busy and noisy and designed for people to stand and participate. We are making a special effort to offer a quiet place for people to manage their diabetes. Just outside Guastavino’s we will have a heated tent set up with tables and chairs for those people who need a quite place to “take time for diabetes”.
We highly recommend people use public transportation. Parking in the area of the UN and Guastavino’s is very limited.
Empire State Building Illumination
Watch on WDD as we light the ESB blue for diabetes! People around the world are meeting the challenge to illuminate buildings and monuments in blue. See www.worlddiabetesday.com on November 14 and follow the lights!
If you are working to light a monument please contact: Dominique@idf.org
Media is welcome at all events. Please contact Kerrita McClaughlyn for a press pass. Kerrita.McClaughlyn@idf.org
