Here is a cut and paste from an interview with another "food" expert who doesn't seem to know the difference between Type 1 and Type 2

Gastronomical blowhard Anthony Bourdain took off the oven mitts and voiced his disdain for Dunkin’ Donuts shill Rachael Ray. In a recent interview with Outside magazine, the “Kitchen Confidential” chef spewed harsh words about the foodie superstar and her choice to plug the fried-dough-selling food chain.

“She's got a magazine, a TV empire, all these best-selling books — I'm guessing she's not hurting for money,” Anthony ranted re: Rachael in a portion of the interview republished in the New York Post’s Page Six. “She's hugely influential, particularly with children. And she's endorsing Dunkin’ Donuts. It's like endorsing crack for kids.”

The crotchety cook made it clear he’s not coming from some moral high ground. “I'm not a very ethical guy,” Anthony said. “I don't have a lot of principles. But somehow that seems to me over the line. Juvenile diabetes has exploded. Half of Americans don't have necks. And (Rachael’s) up there saying, ‘Eat some [bleeping] Dunkin' Donuts. You look great in that swimsuit — eat another doughnut!’ That's evil.”

Oh man! I do so love him. He's so crass and crusty! He seems a fairly smart guy, so I'm surprised he made this comment. But then again it shows you, just cause you're smart don't mean you have common sense!

Can you cite the interview so for those who are going to write can have a point of refrence?

I believe he was referring to Type 2 diabetes explosion that is happening in children/juveniles. According to what I've read...this can be partly because of poor diet.

His point about RR endorsing the donuts had validity.

It's not his or other's fault that there is diabetes Type 1 and Type 2. I think whoever named these diseases should get blasted.:p

What I chose to write.

To: publicity.adult@bloomsburyusa.com

Recently Mr. was quoted as saying, “I'm not a very ethical guy,” Anthony said.

While I agree that promoting foods like dunkin donuts, is bad, and very wrong I'd like to point out that the Juvenile diabetes, more recently known as Type 1 diabetes is not caused from poor diet, but is actually an auto immune disease. My daughter has Type 1 diabetes, and because of remarks like this that have been made by celebrities, and in the media my daughter at 6, faces a world of discrimination even though she is fit, eats right, and trim.

Since Mr. Bourdain has such a passion for Juvenile Diabetes and striking it out, I'd like to invite Mr. Bourdain to learn more about type 1 diabetes. Maybe he can help us to help our kids, and raise awareness about the challenges our kids face each day just to live by taking several injections per day, poking their tiny fingers to get a blood sample several times a day so that we know where their blood sugar is, and what actions we need to take, not to mention having to balance every bite of food that passes through their lips with insulin, which is a constant high wire balancing act.

Thanks for your time in reading this.
Mrs.

Here are a few websites that may be of interest to Mr. Bourdain should he choose to learn more.

I knew, and everyone on this site, probably could figure out that the guy was referring to Type 2 diabetes despite him saying "Juvenile" but many outside of our world do not understand the difference and this guy was having statements published to the general public. I have seen children approached by adults and tell them they need to stop eating sugar or tell them that their mom and dad are the cause of their diabetes and what they eat. The published comment only furthers the distortation in people that have no clue about the difference between the two diseases only to have the two lumped into one.

Here is my reply, I've made no mention of type 2 diabetes - like I said a few days ago - that's not my fight. Type 1 is.

To Whom it may concern,
I'm writing regarding the article about Anthony Bourdain that will appear in your November issue. As has been reported extensively in the media, Mr Bourdain has been quoted with the following, "I'm not a very ethical guy. I don't have a lot of principles. But somehow this seems to me over the line. Juvenile diabetes has exploded. Half of Americans don't have necks. And she's up their saying, 'Eat some [...] Dunkin' Donuts. You look great in that swimsuit – eat another doughnut! That's evil."

While I take no issue with Mr. Bourdain's opinion of Rachel Ray's Dunkin Donuts campaign, I do take issue with the fact that Mr. Bourdain has incorrectly connected Juvenile Diabetes and obesity. I'd like to take this opportunity to educate him and others about Juvenile diabetes. Juvenile Diabetes, or Type 1 diabetes, is an autoimmune disease, striking roughly 13000 children and adults every year. People with juvenile diabetes make no insulin and therefore must receive their insulin by injection, closely matching up their carbohydrate intake with appropriate amounts of insulin. Type 1 diabetes is in no way caused by or related to overeating, snacks, lifestyle, and certainly not donuts. People with type 1 diabetes can and should eat a normal balanced diet. No foods are restricted. Eating donuts has absolutely no relationship to type 1, Juvenile Diabetes. As a parent of a child (a very active and normal sized child) with Type 1 diabetes it's this sort of misunderstanding that we fight, and our children fight every day. We do not need the food police to monitor what goes into our children's mouths. We do that ourselves by counting every last carb that they ingest. Please check your facts before making such a sweeping statement regarding a disease for which your knowledge is clearly limited.

I put a new thread up with my letter because it was a bit long. I did touch on T2 explaining that there are certain lifestyle habits automatically associated with it, and if donuts are so evil, challenged him to do a show on healthy eating!

Believe me, I understand what you're saying and agree that the confusion is does nothing good. I try to make it known about Type 1 and do my best to advocate for my daughter.

One thing I also do is to let her know that people are likely to confuse the difference between Type 1 and Type 2. I tell my DD that people used to think Type 1 Diabetes was caused by eating too much sugar...but that is not true. My DD knows all the common igorant statements about Type 1.

edited to add:

I'll write Bourdain this:

I want to clarifty the Diabetes comment in your recent interview with Outside Magazine.

Juvenile Diabetes is an outdated term for Type 1 Diabetes, an autoimmune disease that is NOT caused by eating junk.

Type 2 diabetes has many implications of poor diet being a partial trigger in developing the disease.

You are so right. Diabetes is not caused by eating junk food, not even Type 2. I think he meant to say they are seeing an increase in type 2 in children, but saying that, food does not cause Diabetes even type 2. We can eat a normal diet. For people with type 1 they must cover the carbs with insulin and for some people with type 2 we control the carbs by eating within our carb allowance program and taking medications and or insulin to help control blood sugars. They are two different diseases, type 1 is autoimmune and type 2 is genetic. I do not need the food police either. I count every carb that goes into my mouth and I do not need someone to tell me what to eat.

THat guy is a real richard.
I understand that donuts are bad, but HOW exactly is rachel ray popular with kids?
I mean, I do have to say....
my kids do prefer the rachel ray cookware line over the emeril line, but frankly, they are more interested in purchasing waterford crystal, and comparing the value of the kilemore line to the mikasa brand knockoff lines.

Uh... or wait, no... that's my mom, I'm thinking of...
my kids dont know who rachel ray is...
me and my silly amnesia

My kids think RR is cool. We have her RR cookbook for kids; and they enjoy cooking meals from it. My daughters were 6 and 8 when they begged for her cookbook after watching her on 30 Minute Meals and hearing about her kids' cookbook. A lot of my kids' friends like RR, too. I couldn't believe other peoples' kids watched FoodTV; but they do!:p

My 5 year old will sit and watch RR, very contently, like he actually understands her! He yells "mom, Rachael Ray is on"! and that's the last I hear from him for 1/2hour =)

When my kids were toddlers, barely speaking, they would see Emrile and shout BAM! They still enjoy watching it today, though for some reason they don't like RR (don't know why, I like watching her) I think they should come up with a show that airs around 5p-530 that is geared totally towards kids, showing things they can make in the kitchen.

Hmmm....maybe I've got something there...
