This is my first kid, so is it normal for a 2 year old to not gain much weight, with or without diabetes? I was weighing him cause I am buying a new sling, and I thought he was going to be around 30 pounds since he feels heavy, but he's only at 25-he's been this weight since his checkup after diagnosis and was 23 pounds when he was 1 years old, 8 months before diagnosis.

Our endo tracks Griffin's height and weight at every appointment and checks it against his previous %ile on the growth chart. Your child should basically maintain the same %ile for height and weight throughout childhood. I don't recall Griffin's weight at age 2, but he gained quite a bit post dx and then stayed on track. You can find growth charts online.

Maddison was the same size (4) from age 5 until 7. She has always been tiny in the 5th percentile and under for weight/height. But, I also know she had a SLOW onset of Diabetes so I believe it was that mostly. She just now grew out of the size 4's and she is 7!!! Just 10months post diagnosis so I feel it took her this long to get back to being "controlled" and healthy growing again. She was 25-28lbs forever, now she is 40 after 10months of "D"

This is a big concern I have.
My 15 year old is 5'10" and 102 lbs. A rack of bones. The Endo doesn't seem concerned but I am. When diagnosed on 4/17/07 he was 95 lbs. He has always been thin so I'm not sure if this is where he would be without this dreaded diease.
Any ideas for gaining weight?

he eats tons too, he eats more carbs at lunch than I do! I'm wondering if this is from him getting sick once a month it seems like with ketones-damn colds!
Our endo tracks height and weight as well. As long as the pattern for growth holds fairly steady, she's happy. DD only gained two pounds since the last visit, which was a concern. High BG from an illness the past few months was the culprit.

my son basically gained nothing the entire year after dx and never gained back what he initially lost until just this year. And he grew very little too. I think a lot of it was high blood sugars at night and a smaller diet than he had had prior to dx - where before he ate whenever, after dx we got a lot more formal about snacks and meals.

One thing to bear in mind is that after the first birthday, children's growth rate slows down radically. If they kept growing at the same speed (they basically triple their weight in the first year) they would soon be huge blimp/hulks. So if your son is eating well, has energy, etc. he might just be doing the normal toddler thing.

that makes me feel better, since he was 3 months old he always wore a size for twice his size, like 3 months he wore size 6 months, 6 months wore 12 months, etc. So hopefully he's just slowing down! He's so skinny through the waist, I don't think there's pants that will fit him once he's potty trained and out of the bulky cloth diaper butt lol. The sling goes to 35 pounds that I was weighing him for so I guess I'll get a lot of use out of it ;)

I would be concerned as well. That is pretty thin. Your son's BMI is about 14.6 which is less than 1 percentile.
When my son (13 years old, 6'2" and 135 lbs) needed to gain weight, I worked on getting him to eat a high fat food every day and made sure he consumed 400-500 grams of carbohydrate each day. It worked well. He now eats about 300-400 grams of carb a day.

We were told he should eat at least 300 grams of carbs a day and most days we are close to that number. It is the fat that is a problem and we really have not figured out how to dose properly for the fat content (pizza, burgers etc). He has been running higher numbers so we are guessing the honeymoon is over and have increased his Lantus. Somedays it seems like we just can't get the numbers down and if there is any fat it seems it takes his body 4 to 8 hours to process the fat. We are hoping the pump will help with this problem and have an appeal in right now as he was denied the pump by our HMO since he has not been a diabetic for a year.

When my son was on shots (and he was for 9 years), we would do two extra shots for the high fat meals. I am sure you can do that as well. A pump would do the same. I would work on finding more food for your son to eat. Very few people can gain weight unless they consume more calories. Philip drinks a big milkshake (2 cups of vanilla ice cream and fruit) nearly every day.

Are the two extra shots you suggest spaced out over the 4 to 8 hour period? With MDI it seems very difficult to get all of the spikes from the high fat content. We try but are not always successful.

That's right. If you consistently notice a pattern of going high after a high fat meal, give another shot about 4-5 hours after the meal to see if this helps. That is what we did with pizza. We found we always did a correction, so we moved the correction shot up a few hours to time it so that it matched when the sugar was going up. We can do the same with a combo bolus on the pump.

hey Becky, not sure which insulins you're using. We have 3 in our arsenal: NPH, Regular, and NovoRapid. We bolus using NR for most meals but for the fatty ones we use Regular plus some extra NPH to cover the longer times needed to digest the food.
Regular starts working about 30-60 minutes after injecting, peaks at 2-3 hours and is still doing a bit out to about 5 hours or so..
