I need to get more accurate nutritional information for school lunches so I guess I need to get on a not as friendly letter writing campaign here since I have spoken to Food services in person, called and even emailed and have to date recieved nothing. Generally the school nurse and I do a pretty decent job but this month some of the lunches that he wants are entering new uncharted territory. So I am looking for some ideas/information to put in my letters so that I can get a response from these people.

Thanks in advance!

I feel your pain, that's the only thing the school where we live had lagged on. I finally just went into the kitchen with the menu and wrote down the carbs on everything I could find... Good luck:cwds:

This is the reason I pack Phoenix's lunch's I hate to guesstimate the school lunch carbs. I hope you can get their attention without having to pull out the unfriendly letters. Maybe just walking into the lunchroom and back into the kitchen will get thier attention? :D I have noticed when it is a face to face I get more info and the stuff get's done sooner.... Good luck let us know what happens

We were lucky. I made a few calls. Got a R&D Scientist from the place that makes the kids lunches to call me back. I get emailed all of the nutritional info every month. It is a nice spread sheet. The problem I have is if Iris tells the truth on how much she eats. So far her levels have been working out great. But she still mainly takes cold lunch.

are you able to eat with him from time to time? I know how hard it is when they put something new on the menu, but at the same time, when there is a new choice, there is always the chance they won't like it.
I ended up having lunch at school as I had to be there for something anyways. It amazes me how many of the kids throw out so much of their lunch, parents truly have no idea!! I did notice that the kids who had a packed lunch tend to eat more of it.

Piratelight.......I think that is a reasonable accommodation for the school to make. Every school or district at least has a dietitian.

Are you serious about a letter campaign? It doesn't have to be "not so friendly" lrtter. We have a lot of diplomatic (at least they are capable of being) people here. Have you read our thread "Banding together to make a Difference" thread. Waht do you think?

Barry - I am all for it, that's why I was asking for help. I dont think it is asking too much, the nurse has asked for a number of years in different buildings and she doesn't think it's too much to ask.

Well to update - my email telling him that I needed lunch carbs for tomorrow and it was a matter of my son's health seems to have gotten me somewhere for now! I do appreciate the willingness to support me with this. I now have lunch carbs for tomorrow and Thursday!!! That is huge for us and he tells me he is working on Friday's lunch. If there is not response soon I may come back and ask for the letters! Thanks guys!

Do you have a 504 in place. We had that as part of our 504-Dietary supervisor would provide carb counts at least one week ahead of meal. THEN, if they don't do it you can pursue other avenues for them not following the 504......
