Here's another Halloween suggestion that we used last year (Cam had just been dx'd earlier that month).......

We "bought back" a lot of the candy from Cameron at 5 cents a piece. We involved his grandparents and other family members as well, and he had so much fun trick or treating! He kept some for himself, and the rest he turned over to us for cash. The kid made out like a bandit!:D

I have always personally hated Halloween, even before D, because I hate to have all the candy in the house, so this was a welcome suggestion in our home!!!

Just thought I'd throw it out there................. :)

This will be our second Halloween with D. Last year she was still on NPH and that wicked schedule:mad:
This year she is on the pump!! ( doing well by the way however its only been 7 days:D)

This year we told deanna she could pick out some of her favorite kinds of candy and the rest we would donate the the childrens Hospital. She liked this Idea.

We kinda ration the candy from all of our children anyway - this happened pre "D". We would let them have 3-4 pieces on Halloween night and then 1 or 2 a day for the next few days, and then they would lose interest. Since my diabetic is only 2, I probably have at least one more, if not 2 more years where I can "swap out" the candy pretty easily. Although, the trick-or-treating itself could cause a low and we have plenty of options to "treat and run" the low!

I let the girls keep what they raelly like.. they each get a bowl to put it in.. it stays in the kitchen and they get a 1 piece, maybe 2 a day.. the extra gets traded for a new toy:)

Lauren saves the pieces she really likes and packs one in her lunch or has one for dessert. She hangs on to the rest to sell to her brothers and the neighbor boys after they have eaten all their goodies :).

12+ years ago was my son's first Halloween on the pump. He ran around so much that his bg ended up being low even with a pillowcase filled with candy and we had to drive him home (a few blocks). He also only wanted to eat chocolate and it didn't bring his bg up of course. Be careful how much you bolus your kids for the candy, especially the chocolate. It's really hot where we live on Halloween so the heat and the running combined contributed to the low.

my kids have never been big candy eaters anyway, so we have it easy. I let them take the stuff they want - they can eat a few things that night but I don't really have to limit it because that's all they want to eat, a few receses, a few snickers and they're done. Then the candy sits in the cupboard until I toss it out. Mama steals all the smarties..mmm...my weakness.
