Since we started with the pump yesterday, we are still on saline and we have some problems with the insertion set, I wonder which sets are you using and did you try others? What is your experience? We are using the minimed pump.

we use the quicksets..we did try a shilloutte set but Kaylee did NOT like.. she's been pumping for a little over a year and we still use the quicksets.. no desire to change anytime soon (I've got 6 back up boxes LOL.. we're using them until they are gone.. plus we get a new box every month.. )
its definitely scary in the beginning.. good for you for using emla.. Kaylee used emla for the longest time.. she doesn't use it every site change now.. if we need to get it done in a hurry she just says 'go ahead and do it..' with an eye roll at the end...

We have been pumping for a month with Minimed. I'm still trying different sets. We started with the Quickset, but I was finding that 1) the cannula gets kinked sometimes (twice in 1 month). It's hard to know if his sugar is high because the cannula is kinked, or for some other reason. The other thing I don't like about the Quickset is the "inserter." I have a 2 year old and he doesn't like to hold still while I get the set in the inserter and then insert. I tried inserting without the inserter and the endo told me that could be a reason that the cannula is kinking, because it's not going in straight, and to use the inserter. AAGHHH
So, we have been using the Sure-T, which has a metal cannula. No inserter, you just pop it in. Much quicker. I cover the site with an IV-3000 clear bandage. I really like them. Sometimes it seems that the site bothers him at first, but I've read from other mothers that their kids tell them that the irritation, if there is any, fades.
I think we'll be sticking with the Sure T for now.
Good luck. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Caro~
We started with the silhouettes, and move to the SureT's. I was fed up with kinking and not knowing if that was the cause of high numbers!!! I've heard good things about the quick sets, but Abby's never tried them.
If your interested in SureT's and want to know more about them. Let me know.
The needle stay in with this infusion set. This is a photo comparing the needle size. The syringe is a 10mm needle and the Sure T is a 6mm needle.

Congrats on the pump start - where did you put the site? I have a 7 year old who is very thin and we are only allowed to use his backside for fear of kinking with the quicksets. Also, are you using 6mm or 9mm? If it is the larger, you might want to try the 6mm. We have not had any trouble. We have noticed a trace of blood in the set but when we remove it, the site looks just like the others without the blood so I don't worry about it.
My son doesn't use any numbing stuff but only feels the sting within the first 5 minutes - after that - he doesn't feel anything.
We haven't tried anything else because we like what we are using now.
Again - congrats!

We started pumping July 10th. We used the quicksets exclusively until last night!!:D
We have had probably 5-6 bad sites during the last 2 months:)since we started due to kinking. One time we went through 3 sets in 18 hours. I could not use Tori's tummy at all as inevitably we would end up with a kink.
Last night we tried a sure t set (Thanks Lanae ;) )
I had resisted trying one initially because the thought of leaving a needle in did not appeal to me.
Our insertion last night with the sure t went wonderfully. Tori did not even feel it. She said it hurt much less than the quickset with inserter and it hurt less after insertion than the quickset does.
We don't have a longer term opinion to offer yet but I am hopeful from the way things have started with our first insertion.
