Kaylee's been asking for carb drinks... I keep telling her to get water.. she can have milk with lunch.. so.. she comes over to me with a 'milk' mustach ask me a question (I don't even remember what it was because I was staring at the milk on her face LOL) and I said, what did you just drink.. nothing.. why do you have milk on your face.. I don't know.. I don't know why my face it wet (while wiping the milk off..) so I let her go get a cup of milk and told her she needs to sit and drink it so I can give her insulin.. no sipping.. just drink it, then you have to wait till lunch..

good grief.. she says she only had a sip.. but she can't be sneaking stuff this early! its not that I didn't want her to have the milk all together.. I just didnt' want her to get a cup and sit and sip it like a coffee.. I want her to drink it so that I can give hre the insulin.. and not have to do a .10 at a time LOL..

she was very cute.. and It was hard to get mad at her.. so I just explained why she couldn't sip it.. and couldn't sneak it..

Milk is pretty slow, I say let her sip it, then give insulin;)

Doesn't it just eat you up to say no to something healthy? I know it did me. When Julia went through this she was sneaking bananas after school. We had to start an open food policy where she could have anything for snack, but she had to have a shot if it was above 15. Maybe you can work something like that out with Kaylee?

Kaylee is on a pump.. so she can basically have anything she wants.. my problem with her having milk without a meal is that the child sips her drinks all day long.. she constantly has a drink in her hand, unsually water, or fruit water... I don't want her sipping milk all day long.. I'll never get the carb count right LOL.. so as long as she's going to sit down and drink it.. its not a problem.. but to take a few sips and go play for 20 minutes, come back and take two more sips, go play for another 20minutes.. its exactly what she does..

she did sit down and drink it all.. I gave her insulin.. and now she's looking for something else to eat.. good grief.. she must be going through a growth spurt.. she hasn't stopped all morning LOL..

How about giving her a half of cup at a time...6g. Give her the insulin and just tell her that she needs to drink it pretty soon because she has insulin for it.

The reality is our kids are kids, and if they're forbidden to do things chances are they will anyways at some point or other. We need to be compassionate and understanding about the fact that this will happen, and I think that in some sense they are not rebelling against us but against the reality of the diabetes..

My daughter knows what she should and shouldn't have at given times of the day, but every once in awhile will sneak something anyways. She knows she can ease her conscience by letting me know (with no lecture and no penalty), and that otherwise it can lead to mistakes being made in insulin dosages. This can be conveyed to an 11 year old - it must be very challenging with younger ones.

Caynun sneaks every chance he can... of course I catch him everytime. When I have to give him him shots he always says "MOM!!! you gotta get them shots away from me":(and I say "Honey, believe me if I could I would get them shots away from you" Its soo sad!!

I left one day for a little over an hour (forgot to take my cell)Caynun stayed home with DH (he knows little about D care) Well Caynun snuck the sugar dish DH caught him with sugar all over his face and the sticky fingers to prove it! DH was beside himself he had no Idea what to do so he tryed to call my phone.. it was ringing next to him..check Bg in the 400's...call 911... I pull in the driveway and theres an ambulance...Caynun sitting up on a gurney...paramidics bent down in from of Caynun... and the most terrified look on my hubbys face!! thankfully he did not have to go to the Hospital gave him a shot, lots of fluids and checked for keytones My husband has been scared to death ever since!

Now how can I get mad at that :D

What about a long square wave for sipping?

I had to experiment with a peanut butter bolus for Liv, who likes to eat plain PB sometimes. We have a yummy natural honey roasted peanut butter and I finally figured a square wave that worked for it.:cwds:

how long does it usually take her to "sip" it? You could try doing a square bolus over 30 mins so she would still be getting the insulin, but also be able to sip it for up to 30 mins before all of the insulin is in her. I do this when eating a sucker, drinking gatorade, or hot chocolate.

sipping a cup of milk for Kaylee could last an hour.. I caught her after she had her first cup with more.. and with a cute little face she says 'I only took this much' putting her finger together.. ididn't punish her for taking it.. its milk.. glad she's going after that rather than soda or some candy.. but I just let her know that she needs to let me know.. and if she wants it she needs to drink it.. not sip it, swish it around, spit it back in the cup, sip it again, swallow it.. take some more, swish it, go look in the mirror and open her mouth to look at it.. swish it some more, dance on her way back to the couch, swallow it, sip some more.. hold it there.. letting it drip out of her mouth on the cat, swish it around, gurgle it, swallow.. sip some more, spit it back in the cup, blow bubbles, sip it, gurgle, swish, dance swallow it.. get the picture??? LOL.. she doesn't just drink anything.. she plays with her drinks.. it drives me insane!!!
