Wow-at least I know I am not alone! We had a diabetes hell night! For snack at 8:00 she ate 30 carbs but forgot to bolus. So, she remembers at 8:30; we just give the bolus-no big deal...10 minutes later, she is crying, shaking, her eyes are rolling into her head...47..she's been lower without these effects...this was just one scary 47...and now what to do. She has all this insulin in her to cover her snack that should have made her go sky high!!!

So, I give her enough carbs to bring her back up; then enough to cover the active insulin in her, and then a few extra just for the hell of it. 20 minutes later - she is 91. Hr later - 118. Phew
11:00 check - 102...hmm..I'll give her 6 carbs, to close to 100 after that low. 12:00-112. 2am (can you tell now I'm just being paranoid!) 148. 4:00 am - 330 - what!!!! Give her a correction - take off 1/2 a unit though-don't know why - it's 4 am...wakes up at 6:00am-she is freakin 58!!! GGGEEEZZZ....

So, I'm really writing to vent - I have faxed everything to the Endo's office for adjustment advice...but on my way to work, all I could think was that I was glad she was going to be with her dad this weekend, so I could get a diabetes break. Then all I could think about is how my baby (ok-9yr old-still my baby) NEVER gets a diabetes break and I cried my entire to work...this disease just totally blows.

I'm with you! We used to have that problem with Emma. When she started swinging, she would swing dramatically high and low before we could get control of the pendulum and get it back into control. I have a friend who just started Basal/Bolus and she's been experiencing similar swings to yours and she's frustrated too.

Whew - sounds like we all need a weekend off!

Oh {{{HUGS****** what a horrible night for both of you. My son has been having nights like that too. Don't feel bad about getting a break from D, its not like your not going to think about your baby or her D.

I say we all met up in Jamaica and have some fruity drinks with umbrellas in them on the beach, Heck I'll even pay for a few cabana boys to come serve us We deserve it :D

it seems to me that your basal is too high.

if you pay our way, I'm sure a couple of us diabetes dads would serve drinks - plus we could intelligently join in the inevitable D conversations.. :)

But seriously, so sorry to hear about your hard night. Seems that either the bolus is acting more quickly than usual (but why?), or food digesting more slowly, or basal too high..

I'm so sorry you've had to ride the insulin rollercoaster! I've also cried rivers on my way to work in the morning!

You mentioned that you bolused at 8:30 which was 30 minutes after a 30 carb snack. For us, a 30 minute delayed bolus usually means we need to re-test and correct only otherwise we go low. Pre-bolusing has made all the difference for us as well. Our endo was the one who suggested we "correct only" if it's been more than 30 minutes and for the most part, it's worked for us.

I will try the correct only 30 mins after food IF we forget our Bolus again. I really think the culprit is the 8pm Basal, like suggested earlier. Our Diabetes Center just had me increase it, and then two nights of this!

And Wilf, I don't know about you serving us drinks on the beach...how good do you look in a speedo??? Although you would be more than welcome to come along for conversational purposes:D

Yea!!! Half naked Cabana boys:D

(((((HUGS))))) from me too, I was wondering if maybe she did bolus for her snack? Then forgot she did it? If that's not it, was she exercising a lot during the day? The 300 was almost certainly a rebound. The low in the mornig is because her body wanted that borrowed glucose back:( Be very careful when correcting rebounds. If you do it, be really conservative:cwds:

Try not to feel bad for wanting a break, we ALL want that for ourselves and our kids.

A weekend away sounds reaaallllllllllly good right now!;) I'm so tired today but can't sleep because it's so beautiful out!:D

I personally try not to correct the rebounds... After Cam's 32 last night be rebounded into the upper 400's, but I knew it would come back down, and it did by morning. I actually should have sent him to school today as his #'s have been perfect! Go figure!

Hey never underestimate the diabetes dads - we have great bodies, minds and hearts! No question that we'd put any cabana boys to shame, though we might not be as servile and we'd probably be putting back a few drinks ourselves..

Seriously my experience is that D parents are a superb bunch. We had the privilege of attending a D family camp for 4 days this year (for all members of families with kids with D), and we were so impressed by everyone we met.
