Complete bedlam? Since last Saturday, Bethany's bg's have been very high. I first thought that it was because of a bad pump change/bubbles in the tubing. But when the bg's started also going up at night and in the AM, I was like "WTF?" She had just gotten over a cold so it wasn't because of illness. And growth spurts nomally only increased her during a short time of the day. So, in the past week, I have had to raise her basals from 4 units tdd to 5 units tdd (and we are still testing tonight, that might go up). We have also had to lower her bf, lunch, dinner ratios and sensitivity. This is all in the past week. We have never had such a dramatic increase in everything before in such a short period of time. What gets me the most (and this is why I think she is coming out of the homeymoon), is that she was basically on .05 from 3A to 1P and now she is not on a basal less than .15. I am exhausted from testing her all night. I hope that this period doesn't last much longer because I am tearing my hair out already.

Any tips, advice, insight would be appreciated from others who have gone though the end of the honemoon period.

Thanks!

I just wanted to add that it's not the insulin, because her bg's are now good in the afternoon and early evening.

Elizabeth,

I can't speak for pump and those issues BUT I can tell you that we are experiencing the same thing with Avery and her night time numbers.

She has peaked as high as 400:eek: some nights and no matter how much fast acting we giver her it just wont budge! Therefore, we upped her L:antus (which may be your basals in pump?) from 7 to 9 and now we are almost going to go up to 10! All in a two week time frame...

You know sometime too it is just the chemistry that is going on... Avery went back to school two weeks ago and haer numbers are so wacky during the week but beautiful on the weekends..

Just wanted you to know that you are not alone ;0 Good Luck and hopefully you'll get some rest soon :)

Hmmm, lots of things going on here.

First, regarding the insulins - we have found they are good for a month. We used to try to stretch them, but kept having bad experiences so we now change them all on the 1st of each month.

Second, if someone is at 400 and "no matter how much fast acting we giver her it just wont budge" then to me this is a strong indication that the bolus insulin is no longer effective.. Try a new one.

Third, if things are all going up and high across the board then yes basal insulin needs to be upped, and upped again the next day, and again the next day if need be until you're back where you want to be.

Finally, if your wee one has been high since last Sat. I'm hoping you've checked for ketones - esp. if on a pump.

Tony's honeymoon lasted for 6 weeks, so that was more than a few months ago so it's all a lil blurry lol. I just remember being up all night cause he was running high, plus he had ketones but he wasn't sick, was acting fine!

Thanks for the responses. I guess she is honeymooning?

Regarding honeymooning, add up all of the insulin she is getting per day. Divide that by her weight in kg. If the number that comes out is 0.5 or less she is honeymooning..

For example if she is getting 8 insulin units per day and weighs 20 kg (44 pounds) then 8/20=0.4 which would indicate she is in her honeymoon..

I asked Kaylee's endo this week if she thought her honeymoon was done and she said she's probably still producing her own insulin.. I don't think so.. she weighs 37lbs (just gained weight.. about 3lbs!:) ) and is on 13tdu (some days more some days a little less..).. rule of thumb is 2.5lbs for every 1 unit of insulin.. so she'd if it were exact it would be 14.8 u.. I think thats close enough to say she's done honeymooning..

Bethany could be going through a large growth spurt, or maybe coming out of the honeymoon period.. idon't think it just abruptly ends.. in a big bang.. just over a period of time you'll ahve to do a lot of increasing..

how much does she weigh (in pounds:) ) and whats her average total daily units?:)

Yes, 37 pounds is about 17 kg. 13/17=0.77, so she's out of the "honeymoon phase". She may still be producing a little insulin, but not enough to have a major effect on trends in BG anymore.

Could be, or it could be the season change. Oddly enough a lot of people see numbers change when the seasons change. There are so many variables it is really hard to say why. If the honeymoon is ending you will know it eventually. Julia's kind of sputtered out. We'd increase a little, then have to decrease a little. It was like 2 steps forward, and one step back. Total pain in the rear. I felt like we were always changing doses for about 2-3 months there.
Take care, Jamie
