So all last year I packed Haley lunch for school. OK that being said,(OK, try to follow along:p). When Mike & I went for our pump training class I made the comment that I have packed a lunch for Haley everyday, the lady sitting next me, looked at me funny and said her daughter who was 5 almost 6 eats lunch like the rest of the kids in her class. That the aid just tells the nurse what she ate, than its added up and than insulin given (you know the routine:rolleyes:). I said out loud that the nurse last year informed me that Haley could not eat breakfast or lunch from the school that a she would have to bring her own because they did not know the carbs counts. I thought the CDE was going to hit the ceiling, she said"she can't tell you that, because that is against the ADA. So here comes the second part of the story, our neighbors son is on the pump and the nurse at the elementary school got with the head lunch lady and figured out the carbs for the food that is served at that school; our schools use the same supplier. So my neighbor gave me a copy of the list, so I in turn gave the list to our nurse, who got together with the head lunch lady, so this morning I had a meeting with the nurse and the lunch lady. Our nurse was just appalled that "Miss Cratchit" told me that last year. So staring Monday Haley will be able to get a tray like all the other kids in her class. My child doesn't even know how to open a milk container, because of "Miss Cratchit" and her inability to do her job. So Mess With Me, :D

Great job! Can I borrow you in our battles with the "Lunch Lady"? I could use more of a "spine" lately.

Wonderful to hear!!!! Mark a little notch on the pump!
Yea, it is pretty great what you learn when you talk to other people.:p
I actually ended up letting our school nurse write Devin's care protocol last year because she refused to read the doctor's orders and the 504 I gave her and I didn't know what else to do. She said we were only allowed 1 page of instructions. How gullible is that?
Wish I'd known about this forum then!!!

Good for you and yay for Hailey!!! Great job, mamma!!!
Funny thing Mia wanted to try lunch from the cafeteria last year for the first time, so I said no problem and she was sooooo excited to go get in line with the other kids and get her tray of food...well, until she actually started eating it, or should I say chewing it....she barely ate anyting because she said that it didn't taste like the food I cook (she was being polite)...ahahaha, that was the end of the cafeteria food for her, so i am back at making lunches every other day, and Mia is happy as a clam....LOL. Sometimes I do wish she would eat the school lunch instead of me making lunch after lunch after lunch LOL.

I'm soooo glad Danielle is older....she makes her own lunch... and has for a few years. Both of mine do. And neither really care for the school lunches much.

Mine has realized that if she has to stand in line for lunch, she doesn't get much time to eat or chat...
We're down to 1 day a week of hot lunches.

Just a reminder - make sure there is a plan for her to cut in line if she would be low and need to eat right away. The cafeteria lady and the nurse have talked and my son just needs to say he needs to cut in line today per the nurse. - Doesn't happen to much but it's nice to have a plan when they buy the lunch.

As it turns out Haley's symbol is in front, so she always goes first to lunch:D. Starting next year she WILL have a 504 plan, even if I have to beat someone in the head for it.
