View Full Version : Has anyone had trouble with potatoes
My daughter when she eats white potatoes her sugar goes high. And then she will then drop to low. And she hates sweet potatoes. So has anyone ran into this same problem? or is my child strange. Tiny

My daughter does not seem to have many food problems except for cereals other than Cheerios.
For the most part pot, either white or sweet do not bother us at all. Brown rice is fine as well.
I have heard many others say that rice and pot. are difficult for them.
How are you serving them? Maybe beefing them up with some extra protein, or a little extra fat might help ward off the drop.
Good luck,Allene

I don't know if you pump or injections, but giving insulin before hand if the high is soon after eating will help, and giving the insulin part up front, and the rest later will help if the high is a while after eating.

White potatoes cause high glucose numbers in Kelton, we avoid them as much as possible..Sweet potatoes do not cause the glucose spikes that the white ones do, so we eat more of those.
Potatoes are EVIL in my house...they have been known to sneak in and raise BS! Dad and StepMom like to limit potatoes or cut them out all together. Mom (that's me) likes to try and teach her how to deal with her fav food making her spike! We have learned that adding an extra 10 carbs to the count works fine as long as we pre-bolus the meal.

My favorite food before diabetes was mashed potatoes, but I had some wicked hypos after carefully carb counting them. Now I only inject for about half the supposed carbs. I'm told they really raise blood sugar, but for me it just isn't so.
well my daughter had huge spikes on potatos which we realised after being diabonsed, and after we started to monitor sugar level... so now we eliminated them, I guess different people react differently, but it can be bad that is our experience...
So at the beginning when we were trying it out, it was going past 20mmol (so part 350 US) after a normal lunch, so we stopped and with different foods there are no such variations.

we pre-bolus on everything except pizza and potatoes, Ryan takes his insulin after he eats for those two things only. Made a huge difference for him.
