Hi all,

I'm sleep deprived so please forigve any typing/spelling errors :o

Last night we changed Eoins site as normal at bed time...gave him his bottle and checked him 2 hours later...11 o'clock at this stage....bloods were 25...to say the least I nearly had a heart attack.

We disconnected his site and there it was a kinked / torn canula...I don't really know what to call it it was completely bent about 1 mm from the top and it had to hurt, it looked like it would have torn him under the skin....

We changed his site gave him the correction and were checkin him till 3 am this morning to make sure he came back to normal...the porr pet slept all the way through this, so at least I know the second change didn't hurt him

We use the quick set insertor...nothing seemed to be difeerent in the change...anyone any ideas / suggestion on why this happened or how to prevent it?

I'm off to sleep at my desk now ;)

Lou

Maybe just a fluke or he caught it on something. Is this the first time it happened?

I know when my daughters line catches on something, that's the first place it tears out from. That usually happens at school and I get the call about her pump line being broken!

Hi,

We've had a bent canula with the Quick-set too. If it makes you feel any better, it was bent 90 degrees but Aaron was not having any pain at the site at all.

They say the straight-in sets are a little more prone to kinking than the angled sets, which has been our experience too. Sometimes they just don't go in quite right. We usually try to change the set before dinner time at the latest, so that if there's going to be a problem we don't have to deal with it in the middle of the night. You can tell within a couple of hours if the dinner bolus isn't working.

Hope this was just a very very isolated incident!

Thanks a million for all the reassurance and help

On the line being pulled...we've just started using the tube guard...seems so far to be working on making it less likely to be pulled out as it's not hanging loose. thnx to some wonderful advice from Jane

Good idea on doing it a bit earlier...Eoin is just 2 so we were going for the change during the bathtime routine...it got pushed out a bit on Monday till 9...but usually it would be around 7

I spoke to our nurse and she has come accross this a bit .. a suggestion she gave wass to keep a few sets in teh fridge as they are less likely to kink at a lower temp...I'll try it and let ye know how it goes

Thanks again

Lou
