OK, some background. Jason has been receiving speech, OT & PT since he was 20 months old and has had an IEP since then. Until last year he was in a CTT class. While having the meetings for this coming fall's IEP placement determination he was DX-ed. I literally had his meeting over the phone while he was in the hospital, 4 days after DX. The team was aware of his new DX and made provisions in his IEP for D care. The IEP was completed and agreed to then...and I just needed to wait for word on the actual school he would be attending. (It was up in the air due to his medical needs and his sister's need for a CTT class...they need to be in the same school.)

So, mid July I get a formal letter from the sp.ed people confirming his sister's placement. Its in our district school. So, while I have no confirmation on this...I am going on the assumption he is also enrolled there.

Days after receiving her letter I call the school to try and work out some of the final plans for Sept,. Nope. No one is in the office until the last week of Aug. So I call today, nope...the secretaries will be in on Wed...call back then. Oh, and the nurse will not be in the building nor available until next Tues...that would be the first day of school, BTW.

OK, now I am a patient person, but isn't this a bit ridiculous? Seriously. I have no confirmation he is even enrolled there. I haven't a clue what kind of paperwork I need. (Although, no fool I, have had my endo NP complete her usual batch of paperwork for me...just to cover my own tail) I also haven't any idea of when, where or how his needs are going to be taken care of. If I need RXs for the school...what kinds of supplies I need t provide. I don't even know if the school has had any D experience. I suppose they expect me to just take care of all of this on the first day of school. Which is hard enough, generally speaking. But I also have a DD who is going to require at least some attention from me that day. She does have a documented behavoural concern.

So, do I call back Wed and ask to speak to someone who can help me? Do I show up at the school with two hyper 4 year olds and insist to speak with someone? Or do I just let it ride....:o

That is ridiculous!!! How on earth can that school operate that way? And the nurse not showing up until the first day? Ours goes back to school when the teachers do - two weeks before school starts. That's when she has all of her meetings with the parents (we had ours last Friday).

I wouldn't wait until Wednesday. I would get on the phone to the superintendent's office and speak to someone now. This makes no sense to me at all!!

Good luck and let us know how you make out!!

Ditto, I would get on the horn. There is no way you can leave it until the day school starts. I ran into a similar situation this year. Unfortunately with some school systems you just have to be very persistent to get what you need for your child.

Thanks!

OK, so I have a call in to the regional health office. Unfortunately everyone is being "in-serviced" this week. The lady who answered the phone said she will try and track someone down to help me. Im gonna call back tomorrow if I don't hear anything before then.

If this is a foretaste of things to come...its gonna be a mighty long year!

A few thoughts are popping in my head....

Prinicipals are generally there even in the summer time. I'd call the prinicpal ( leave a message if no one there ) and say you need to touch base before school starts. Nurse is usually in a day or two in advance to set up.....prinicipal should be able to contact nurse and have you 2 meet prior.

Our teachers usually send out letters to the kids.....maybe you'll know what class you are in by that ! LOL But, seriously.....a call to SPED director should clear that up quick enough, espeically where you have an IEP already.

I always go in to see Ty's teacher in advance to school starting. Just so we can touch base, go over any specifics and see if they have any questions for us. I just write a note to them( with my phone number), and leave in their box at the main office. I've never had a problem and I'm sure you won't either.

Have a good first day !!

PS....confused as to why you got a formal letter for DD's placement, but not sons ? Just an oversight ? And just plain nosy......If they are both on IEP's and same age....do you hold meetings at same time ? That has got to be hard having twins with significant needs that require IEP's....I have trouble managing one !!

Im guessing here, but DD is in Sp Ed (CTT class) and Jason is not. Hes starting general ed this year. He was in the pre-k version of CTT last year. So their IEPs are overseen by 2 separate groups.

Hmmm...maybe I should call the principal. I will if I cant get any satisfaction tomorrow. I don't want to get onto the "enemies" list just yet...but Im getting frustrated and annoyed by this.
