View Full Version : having a hard time with highs

My daughter has been having a lot of highs lately. She will do fine for a week or two and than it will all start up again. She gets insulin resistant, too. I have to up basals and corrections. It is a nightmare. Is this normal to happen so often? It is like she is going through a growth spurt or getting sick but she never gets sick. Could she be growing that much? I just don't understand it. Also, it's not her ratios needing adjusted. She gets very insulin resistant and than after a few weeks everything goes back to "normal" for a while, just to start up again after a few weeks of good numbers. It is making me crazy.
Also, another thing that makes no sense, I will correct her sometimes with a syringe and she comes down nicely. When the shot has worn off she will creep back up. I have changed one site after another. It can not be the site EVERY time but why does the shot work better? I have changed site locations, new insulin, upped basals, ect. Everything I know to try and nothing has helped. If I call the endo with my frustrations she will want me to take her off her pump for a while. Should I do this?
Please any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I am getting so tired of fighting this monster!!

Bethany starts to go higher every week or so (and lower too ) and we have to adjust her basal accordingly. Right now she's sick, so she's been running high (it started a few days prior to the cold symptoms). Bethany is the same age of your dd so maybe this is the norm now because of growth spurts? As for the shot working better, I think it's because of the same reason Bethany goes high after I change her pod...the pump's insulin seems to not absorb as well as a shot's insulin. We have learned to deal with this by giving her more insulin up front after pod changes.
HTH a little...GL

I can tell you that you're not alone! We're still "new" to the pump, but I can relate! It sounds like your doing all the right things- and it quite possibly could be a growth spurt. Part of it, could be the monster.
I'm sorry, I feel like I'm not a lot of help.

most people I know who are pumping are constantly making little adjustments for growth spurts. We have them all the time (we're not pumping) and I think it's just the way it is.... just when you congratulate yourself for doing so well, it all changes.
Remember not to be so tough on yourself about highs and lows.
Have you tried a different type of site. Yours might work okay, but something else might work better. If you know what I mean.

That was one thing I was wondering if maybe we needed to change the type of site we use. She uses the Inset and I am scared to try an angled set without an inserter. We insert her sensors and I don't think I could do that manually.

Personally, I think those crazy numbers are normal at that age. I think it has a lot to do w/growth hormones. Things didn't calm down for Carson until he turned 6, about a year ago. At one point during the toddler years, his insulin:carb ratio was 1 to 8 -- now it's 1 to 27. I remember that if we had 3 days of consistancy, that was GOOD. That's probably not what you wanted to hear, but I think it's totally normal for 3 year old to be so inconsistant!! Hang in there :cwds:

Hi Cyndi
We had the same problem with the quick set. The tube would kink at the tip and she would get high. We were constantly changing the set out sometimes once a day. We then switched to the silhouette (angled set) and have much better results... It hardly ever kinks. If you don't have the serter you could probrobly get one for free from your endo.
Good Luck, I know how frustrating this can be at times.

She pumps with Animas and I may be wrong but I think Minimed is the only one with an inserter for angled sets.
Anyone please let me know if I am wrong about this.
