Of course this happens when he goes to spend the night at a friend's house. I"m guessing the set went bad, so dh went to go get him. Not sure how much insulin to give since obviously we don't know how much higher he is than 600.

What do you do in these circumstances???

Do you just bolus for carbs eaten? He had a football game which I'm guessing the set got kinked during it. i know what he has eaten since then, should I just cover those carbs??

If he's staying home I'd give a correction also. If he's out of your hands for the night, I'd be more on the safe side and bolus for the carbs.

1) Wash hands, rinse very well.
2) dry very well.
3) recheck bg by squeezing out the first drop and wiping it with a cotton ball, then squeeze and use the second drop.

We always recheck when we get a high number like that, that is not normal, and has no obvious reason.
If it really is that high we bolus for a bg of 600, and retest every hour with corrections.
We check ketone levels. If ketone levels are moderate to high we call doc, if not we just take care of bg, and watch ketone levels as long as bg remains above 240.

The higher the bg the more insulin it usually takes to drop it. With a HI I wouldn't suggest just bolusing for carbs, that is just too high for that to be the safe side. At least give part of a correction.

Good luck. I hope it works out and that you are able to get some sleep.

since its now 9am.. I"m probably not much of a help LOL.. but when we get a Hi reading (which is over 500 on our meter) we treat it as a 500 because we don't know how much higher she is.. she could be 501, or she could be 700.. so we treat as 500 and then check in an hour to seee if she's come down at all.. if it still says HI, we check in another 1/2 45minutes, if it still says HI we give more insulin.. and test frequently..

sorry that happened, and at a sleep over.. thats such a bummer.. :( Hope he's feeling better and he came down quickly!

UPDATE-------

When I spoke with him on the phone I made sure he washed his hands well, he said he did and the g-ma who was there confirmed (she raised 2 D kids so is aware of good handwashing). He entered 600 into his pump and it called for a .7 correction which he gave.

By the time dh got there, maybe 20 min later at most, he was at 597 and gave a 2 unit shot I sent with.

Of course when they got home I am ready with ketone strips, but he had already gone to the bathroom and we have no blood strips.

We decided to do a set change when he got home thinking it was the set. When he yanked the set we saw no evidence of a clogged or kinked set:confused:

I tested him when the set was in before bed, half hour after the shot, he had gone from HI to 333:eek: Gave a snack with no bolus.

1 hour later 150, suspended pump, 1 more hour, 100 gave snack.

We think that he grossly underestimated carbs and had french fries. Thankfully he thought to test his blood, sounds like the adult supervision was not what we had expected.

I'm a little confused.. if your son entered 600 into the pump and it said to give .7 for a correction, why was he then given another 2 units by syring not long afterwards? I'm not trying to second guess you or anything, just trying to figure out what you did:) I'm glad he came down.. it could have been the excitement and miss carbs that easily set him 'through the roof' as we call it here:)

glad everything is back to 'normal' now.. ihate it when kaylee's meter starts saying hi to me..:cwds:

I gave the shot since I thought tht the set was bad as it had been 3 days and a rough football game. I also thought a .7 corrrection seemed very low. I'm also preggo so my brain isn't functioning well, especially when it comes to diabetes which really scares me!! Hopeully we will both survive this----:)

I would keep a close eye tonight, 2 corrections after a football game (He played in it right?) Would make me very nervous...sorry

I'm just thinking he may have had an adreneline high, (In which case the body will want that glucose back)then if the carbs were off it just added to the higher number making the HI...Seth was high after soccer yesterday too, in the 400's, but came right down with a conservative correction. Had a low too. Extreem exercise is HARD sometimes (Roll eyes)
