As mentioned in another thread, today was Mia's 6th birthday and we threw a huge party for her! Last year we were new to the pump and weren't comfortable yet with letting her eat a lot of treats, and the years before were difficult because she would have to get a shot for every bite of cake or cookie.. So, this year we went all out food-wise in an effort to give Mia a "normal" birthday and to defy this evil Diabetes dragon... I decided that (within limits) I was going to let her eat today what she wants, and when she wants it...I was just going to test her more frequently, which was her idea anyways....
We invited our best friends and neighbours, about 35 (!!) people (20 kids, 15 adults) in total, and I spent the last couple of days preparing foods and baking treats. We had chocolate chips cookies (70 big ones!), homemade dark Swiss chocolate brownies, a huge birthday cake, lots of pizza, homemade salads and homemade salsa and chips....
Mia woke up to a beautiful 132, and I knew we were off to a good start! We also got a bounce house for the first time and organized for the local reptile store to come and do an educational reptile show for an hour (which was awesome!). The party was from 11-2 but people stayed till 5! Mia had a BLAST!!! I don't think I have ever seen her happier since her dx. During the hours of 11 and 5, Mia ate more sweets than I think she normally eats in a month or two LOL. She had:
2 big chocolate chip cookies
2 slices of birthday cake
2 juicy juice boxes
a slice of cheese pizza
a bunch of pretzels (a problem food for us)
a bunch of chips
a roll of smarties
a small brownie
Her BGs were:
10:45am 85
12:12pm 92
1:30pm 92
3:30pm 87
5:30pm 93
..all I can say is...take THIS, Diabetes!!! Yeah! Parent 1, Diabetes 0! :p Bring it on..I am ready for the next round!!
