Hey all

5 weeks ago, I did not expect I would be sitting here writing this post. 5 weeks ago Ben was diagnosed. Once the shock had worn off, one of my initial panics was OMG - there's no way we can go on holiday abroad.

I have to say, if it wasn't for all of you on this forum, we probably would've cancelled it. I want to say a HUGE thankyou to everyone, you've certainly helped a great deal. I do not feel anxious about the holiday now, and am determined we are all going to ENJOY it!!!!!

So, on Monday we are all off to the sunnier skies of Corfu for 2 weeks. Cases are almost packed, just fetched the currency, have the tickets, have LOADS supplies for Ben and we are generally very excited.

I don't think we've ever been quite so ready for a break.........

Once again, many thanks to you all for your support.

:) :) :p

Best of luck and enjoy. Just to let you know, while traveling your child may experience some higher or lower numbers. Our son, for some weird reason, was running low throughout a flight to Minneapolis and during his weekend trip visiting with friends. Same ratio, same insulin. But maybe just the excitement of traveling got him to dip. So just watch for anything unusual such as this and you will be fine. The good news was that he didn't need an much insulin during the trip since, the numbers were never going too high. ;)

Take care!!! And let us know how it went when you guys get back.

Oh and another thing I wanted to tell you....

Our endo warned us to keep Ben hydrated whenever we fly as the liquid helps to keep his levels down. (ie by diluting the glucose).

Just something for you to consider..

Have fun!

Thanks for all the replies, the holiday was very successful and relaxing with no hiccups......

Well, after all the anxieties, worries, confusion etc, we are now BACK from our trip, have the suntans to prove it and we had had the most wonderful, fun and relaxing time. The kids have had a ball, and Ben was absolutely fine.

We travelled through the night (1st worry, Ben normally sleeps for 11 hours) - he was fine, had to give him extra snacks to keep his levels up. We got to the hotel at 02.30 and there was a 2 hour time difference - 04.30. Ben then slept for around 5 hours. When he woke, he had his normal dose of insulin, and breakfast, and then we carried on with 'normal' routines.

I was checking Ben's sugars approx every 2 hours because he spent most of his time jumping in and out the pool, was very active and his levels were low, he had extra snacks (still healthy) and also had an ice cream or a small dessert every day, which he coped very well with. We adjusted his insulin a couple of times during the trip.

We were lucky because there was an abundance of food available (it was all inclusive) and they had 'diet' coke as well as ordinary.

Ben had a mild hypo on the last day when he woke up. His levels on waking was 3.4mmol - 61mg) and he had the shakes. I gave him 3 glucose tabs, and then straight down for breakfast and he was fine all day. (This was Ben's first hypo since dx)

Travelling back was also through the night, only later. I tried to get Ben to sleep as much as possible and again just gave extra snacks. Again he coped with it all fine.

I took enough supplies for 14 days x2 just to be sure and I split it into 2 bags in case one got lost. I took a copy of the prescription, in case we lost both bags!!!
I had a letter from the hospital explaining the carrying of needles through customs - this was fine, nobody asked!!!

So all in all it was great and I want to thank you all for the good advice you gave me prior to us going. Looking now to book next year's holiday.

IM glad you had such a great time and all w/ no hiccups.. Thank you so much for letting us all know how things went... I think its important to hear that we can all still enjoy life even though we have "D" in our lives... Specially when anyone is having a tough day... Great job mom and dad on such great care while traveling
