I was wondering how many of you, who have children with Type 1, or any other family member with diabetes, participate in the TrialNet Study?

My younger two boys and I participate. I wish I could get my oldest son to participate, since he is Jennifer's full brother (where as the little boys are only half brothers). So far, the boys continue to test negative for any antibodies.

I test positive for one or two. My blood sugars tend to run a little high, so they believe I will eventually end up with diabetes. I have two strikes against me: my dad is Type 2; my daughter is Type 1. Add to that, I am overweight, 40-something, and don't get enough exercise (I suffer from chronic pain, most of the time, which makes walking for exercise a real challenge).

Anyway, the boys and I should be needing to go in for testing here within the next month, I think. :p

Anyway, I just wanted to know how many others "join" us each year.;)

I participated and tested negative for all antibodies. Because of this I was categorized as being low risk for developing Diabetes and told that my participation was no longer required. I am kinda bummed that I cannot do more to help! I do not have any other kids and no one else in my daughter's family who is eligible participates (most eligible participants are on her dad's side of the family and none of them are willing to participate:().

I would do more if I could! :D

My husband and I both tested negative for all antibodies and were thanked for our participation. I too am sorry I can't help more. We don't have any other children so there wasn't anyone else to test. I wish my sister-in-law could get her twins tested. They are 1 1/2 years old. Maybe sometime...

My husband, non-d son and myself were all tested. We started testing almost 3 years ago and I was very strongly positive for all 3 antibodies. I have gone in every 6 months since then for a 2 hour OGTT and this past June I was diagnosed with type 1 at through Trialnet (at age 30). So, I'm very glad I was in the study -- I feel like I really did my part to help their research. And it probably kept me out of DKA. I was also able to get early treatment. But at the same time, it was still a huge shock to be diagnosed.

There are a few threads in this forum that talk about the benefits and risks of the TrialNet studies for your kids.

My 3 boys and I were all tested. Joey my middle son was positive for antibodies. He currently has 3 of the 4 they are looking for and his GAD is pretty high. He has had 3 of the OGTTs that Brenda had. We have been watching the results. He doesn't know it but his bg is slowly climbing a little higher each time, but not to diabetic level yet. Joey has a history of high bg when he is sick. Joey is a pretty cute kid, he is staying in the study for 2, well now 3 reasons. At first it was to help, then after he got a taste of the glucose syrup, well he'd sit through a 2 hour OGTT just to drink that (liquid candy, yeah!) now they have started paying $50 per visit. We feel like Joey earned it, so it is all his. I'll cover the gas and expense on my own......

Wendy, on another note. I have a friend that has arthritis. He goes to his local Y for warm water arobics. Don't know if this would help you, but I thought it was worth mentioning. Taking the preasure off of his joints some, and then the warm water; he says that both of those things really help his pain. I hope you can find a way to reduce your pain that is effective for you.

My husband and myself both tested negative in 2004 and were told that we were no longer needed. They tried and tried to get blood out of my daughter then but after quiet a few pokes my husband said enough. I took her in November after she started showing signs of diabetes. She was negative that day but they did say that it didn't mean anything. She was just sent a letter to particpate again since her GAD was higher and C-Peptide was lower than normal. She has been as high as 210 and as low as 43 so her ped sent her to the endo. Brandon's endo thinks that she is prediabetes and it is only a matter of time.

IMHO this is the only safe protocol being tried and the only one I would consider.

The Nutritional Intervention to Prevent Diabetes (NIP) Study is
actively seeking participants.
