We hear grim news a lot it seems about diabetes, so I thought I'd post some good news. My son (19) had the hand surgery (titanium screw permanently placed in his broken scaphoid bone) and thank you for your wisdom and kind thoughts on all of that as I posted regarding it. :cwds:
Well, last week was the follow-up one week appointment. His healing is ahead of schedule and his surgery site is doing great! We hear how diabetics are slow healing, etc... and I know that is true. I think also that as we are diligent in our care for our kids (or our kids care for themselves) that their prognosis can be great.
So just alittle feedback from surgery that healing is ahead of schedule and the healing is doing excellent!!! Gotta love some good news!! :)

Wonderful news!!
I was told that slow healing was related to prolonged, sustained hyperglycemia. Unfortunately, everyone assumes that all people with diabetes have this issue and therefore don't heal well.
I'm glad your son's surgery went well!

That's FANTASTIC news, Laurie!!! Hmmmm, with that titanium screw in his hand permanently, I wonder if he'll set off the alarms at the airport? ;)
Congrats again!!!!!

No doubt he's at high risk for something happening at the airport with the screw and the pump! He's picking up his orthodics right now at the podiatrist - at least those are made of rubber! Geesh! :D
You know my dad scared the kageebies out of me - he said make sure he can have an MRI now with the screw. He said the MRI would try to suck the screw out of his hand. Oh thanks dad!! Always something to worry about as a mom!!!!!!!!!!!
I look at his great healing as a victory for Type 1 kids everywhere! :D

That is great news!
There have to be lots of people with metal replacement parts ;) I'm sure they can somehow handle an MRI. An interesting question though.

Surgeon said he'd be okay for an MRI. The screw is hollow interestingly.

Glad to hear all is well! He's a tough kid. Just think of it this way, he's getting all of his health issues out of the way when he's young and can heal well. When he's older he'll be tough as nails and will be able to manage anything!
