My daughters dr. office doesnt want her going to bed with a BG under 150. So last night she was 115. So in a normal rang but still to low for bed. So i gave her some juice water. well at 11:00 when i checked her she was 290:eek:
do you all suggest something i could give her, if her BG needs a LITTLE kick but not THAT much of a kick?

THANKS!

Juice will spike you and not last very long.

How about something with protein, like something with peanut butter.

so like 1/2 a pb sandwich?

I like two hershey kisses (or a mini-candy bar, like milky way) and a tablespoon of peanut butter. That's about 6 grams carbo and enough fat to make it last a little longer than juice, with very little spike.

Did they tell you how many carbs to give her?

2T= 7 carbs for some peanut butters.

Maybe a tablespoon, with a couple of teddy grams. You'll have to experiment and see how she does. I like the hershey kiss idea (one of my favorite late night treats).

We use our correction factor to determine how many carbs to bring her up to a certain amount. We use our dinner carb ratio of 32:1 and our correction factor of 225 to determine that we want 1.5 carbs for each 10 points we want to raise her.

So, 3 ounces of juice is about 10-12 carbs. If we give her that much, we will raise her about 80-100 points. The CDE always tells us to shoot for 80 (low end of the range), but at night I think she's nuts and I shoot for the TOP end of the range (180). But there are nights she goes to bed at 150 and stays there. There are other nights she goes to bed at 200 and drops to 50s, or nights like last night when she went to bed at 90, was 150 at midnight and 300 by 3am - so nights are a crap shoot for us!

We have started giving peanuts with juice to have the protein help keep the #s up once we get them there.

Experiment a bit, you'll find something. Pay attention to the carb count. Everybody is different, so you'll need to try stuff and see how it works.

Protien/fat is good to slow down the upward BG movement. Also good for kids that need a little extra later (Like those on NPH). PB crackers, etc.. Anything with fat/protien in addition to the carbs.

With us, Curtis is very 'steady state' at night - so I'll give him a little if he needs a little, and a lot if he needs a lot. Every 15g of carbs brings him up 100pts (the textbook ratio). So if he was 100, I'd give him one starburst or glucose tab (4g of carbs) to raise to 125 which is where we like him at bed.

I don't know how much you correct with, but when Kaylee was first dx we were told 15 carbs of juice.. that sent her sailing through the roof.. it only takes her about 4 carbs to get back within range, if she is really low (30s and 40s) we will give more than that.. but to get her to her target at night we do abuot 4 carbs:)

For lower numbers before bed we give 1pb scoop (1tbsp?) and 1/4c milk, or something like 2 animal cracker and 1/4 c of juice, or cheese and crackers, all depending on how low the low is. We give tiny snacks for tiny tummies, looking around 10-12c unless unusually low of course. We buy Motts for Tots juice, it has 13c because it is half water and half juice. They taste really good actually!

we have actually done 15-20 grams of ice cream, it stabalizes Brandon's blood sugars...a little rise but not a hard spike and fast downward spiral.

If Seth has a good bg, but, not high enough for bed...I give him 1/2 a glass of milk. It works GREAT.:D It should work within 1/2 an hour or so, then keep her up.

Ice cream works too, or some yogart...I like milk the best though...I usually use the other ones if he's been running around a lot...Then ice cream or yogart works best. You will need to experiment to see how much works for her

We experimented when she was first diagnosed and now we know exactly how many points an ounce brings her up. We use the 4oz Gerber juice bottles and just wash and reuse for measuring. 1 oz. brings her up 50 points so we never give her the whole 4 oz of juice. They also have the separate screw on spill proof spout that we use and this is great for night time.

We did the same thing with smarties.

Austin doesn't drink juice unless he's below 100, then he has a small glass of juice or soda AND a snack. For him, that's peanut butter and crackers or a pb spoon and glass of milk.

It's only been five months since dx, though, and I wonder how much longer he can eat peanut butter EVERY night.... :p

What are some other protein/fat/carb combos that don't involve pb?

Peanut butter by spoon is a choking hazard, especially for a young child. Better choices would be ice cream, cheese, lean lunch meat, etc. Another possibility: Try adding 1 Tablespoon of uncooked cornstarch to milk or other food. It's only 7g of carb and is very slowly digested. It will help keep the blood sugar up all night. It's the secret ingredient in the diabetes bars such as Nite Bites and Extend. (The bars are too chewy to be appropriate for a toddler.)

I've come up with an uncooked cornstarch substitute that my son likes and is similar in effect to the cornstarch bars such as Extend and Nite Bites.
Ingredients
4 oz. (by weight - 1/2 8oz. cup) plain lowfat (1.5%) yogurt (carb - 8 gms., protein - 5.5 gms., fat - 2 gms.)
1/4 c. unsweetened applesauce (carb 7.5 gms., protein - 0, fat - 0)
1 level Tablespoon cornstarch (carb 7 gms., protein - 0, fat - 0)
ground cinnamon to taste (free)
Instructions
Mix ingredients together. Refrigerate any uneaten portion.
130 Calories: 22.5 g carb, 5.5 g protein, 2 g Fat
Can substitute any fresh, frozen or canned fruit. Just count the carb into the total.

We sometimes like a piece or two of "fake" crabmeat on a cracker with a bit of mayo or cheese and other times a small glass of kefir (drinkable yogurt) does the trick.

We also like a dried apricot with a couple chocolate chips stuffed inside. It's nice and slow (low GI), but tastes like a special treat for only about 6 carbs.

But we eat some crazy stuff at our house, so maybe these won't work for everyone:p

We stick to most things 10-15 carbs depending on how much we need to rise:

Small Kid Yogurt Drinks (our favorite - recommend by someone on this site to us a while back and has been a great tip)
Juicy Juice (small) boxes
Cheese & Crackers
Peanut Butter and Crackers (although we have to watch this one - he really likes it and its easy for him to eat too many than we want)
Meat Sticks and Crackers
Glass of Milk
100 Cal Paks

Since dx, it's trial and error for us to know how much....just when I think I have it down - it all changes!!!! We try to have as much variety as possible.
