So ketones have been confusing me. Mia woke up with a blood ketone of 3.2 this morning. Before bed her blood ketone level was 0.4. She had low blood sugar last night but she had eaten some shrimp, snow peas and a couple graham crackers before bed. So if her body is not starving her bs is low, then what caused the ketones. She's been sick all weekend, so I'm assuming the sickness is doing it. But doesn't that sound a little wierd?

No, sickness will cause the ketones. You have to feed the ketones, another words eat carbs to give insulin to help get rid of the ketones. Of course drinking plenty of fluids will help get rid of them, but extra insulin is required to get rid of ketones.
I hope Mia gets to feeling better soon. Try and get her to eat and drink, those ketones can be nasty. 7up (soda) is good for the tummy (according to some) and high in carbs.

What type of illness has she had? If it is the stomach flu, that is enough right there to produce large ketones. Everyone produces ketones when they vomit. However, people who do not have Diabetes can more easily get rid of them because their body makes its own insulin.

make sure the liquids are caffeine and carb free ( water diet 7-up or even low carb juices that will keep her hydrated but not require extra insulin.

Also have you called the endo about the 3.2 blood ketones? That is awfully high. Our endo advises us to call them with anything over 1.5 and to go straight to the ER with anything over 3.0.
