My daughter started 3rd grade last week at a new school.

I've met with the school and did up a 504 plan. They all seem really supportive.

The agreement was for Katie to swing by the office after lunch and tell the lady what she ate from the daily menu. Last year they had the nutritional guide online for the school's menu, but for whatever reason it's not on there this year.

The nurse just called and said that since it's not online anymore, she's been having to "guesstimate" the carbs for what she's eating.

HUH? And then she asks if she can send home a menu for ME to calculate the carbs, so she's not having to guess. WTH??

I said, "How am I suppose to calculate carbs without knowing the ingredients, weights, etc...???" I said there has GOT to be a nutrition guide for a public school system.

Am I smoking crack? Isn't every public school system required to have nutrition guides for their food menus?

Do you have a district nutritional person over all the schools lunches? I would go to her. I think they have to publish the information. Our school does not post it online but they send it home to me. The first day or two I will have to pack a lunch but after that, I get it at least two weeks before the month starts and it has all the nutritional info including carb counts for the entire month.

I would gently remind them that legally they must provide you with the carb count (nutrition information) of every single food they serve. Tell them that they need to get the ball rolling and that you will be expecting it by the start of school. Tell them that the only "estimating" you will be doing is deciding which day to file a 504 and discrimination complaint! I guess that I might even be nice and give them one week from the start of school to get the menu information, since the first week is hectic enough!

No, you're not on crack- they are if they think that they're going to get away with that kind of an answer.
How have site changes been going? You've been gone for a while, and I'm been wondering about Katie.
I would agree with what the other two posts are saying. In the meantime of a week of waiting, pack some cold lunches. It's going to be in Katie's best interest for you to "calculate the carbs" from food at home. Even a subway sandwich would be easier than what they're expecting you to do.
Good luck!

Thank y'all so much! I didn't think I was expecting something ridiculous. Thankfully her numbers have been good so far at school, but I'm annoyed that they're telling me on the 4th day of school that they've been guesstimating this whole time.

Sorry, I've been absent...I really enjoy this site! Really helpful information! :D

I've been doing my Annual tour duty for the Air Force Reserves, so I've been in and out all summer. After the first traumatic experience with the site change, I am happy to report that she has NO problem with it now. :D

In fact she said she was glad that I had to put the site in her butt cheek, because that's where she wants me to do it from now on.

The pump pack that we got from one of the websites y'all recommended is working GREAT for her too!

I love this forum, you guys rock!

I'm glad all of us here could help. It makes fighting this disease easier for me when you know you've helped someone! :o
I'm glad to hear Katie is doing better with the sites, and loving the pump pouch. :)
No apologies needed, I was just wondering how things were going. Glad to have you back around.
Now, go count some carbs for Katie! You do have the Calorie King book, right? :cwds:

Oh yes. Definitely! One copy in her insulin "purse", one copy at work and one in the car. :)

Our school nurse goes in and asks for the ingredients, and amounts, and what portion they will be serving and does the calculations herself, then since the menu is a rotating menu she saves this on her computer and will even share it with parents.

Until you can get this resolved I'd suggest either doing a home lunch, or figuring the carbs yourself so that your daughter doesn't have to suffer. I am sure the kitchen can give you a list of ingredients if they make it them self, if not you may have to go to the supply company.

I never have Phoenix eat the school lunch after the first year of Kindergarden the nurse called me to tell me what she was going to give him for insulin she says he had

mac and cheese - 4g carb
corn - 2g carb
milk - 7g carb
brownie - 10g carb.....

I about fell off my chair at work I ended up going to the school cause mac and cheese alone is 25-32g carbs.... since that day I pack a lunch for him and carb count it down in baby steps for the nurse

sandwich 22
(pb-3
sf jelly 2
bread 17)

and so on that way I know for sure what he is getting and that it is right, I didnt know they had to provide a nutritional list tho.... I should see if our school has one, he will still pack a lunch but just out of couriosity sake...:p
If the nurse ever called and told me she was guesstimating I think I would loose my mind, I mean there are times when I have to guesstimate but that is ME not HER, I know my son and know how it will affect him (for the most part) and to have them in a classroom with what 20-30 other kids and 2 adults in the room??? Just not safe enough for me...

I hope you get it staightened out good luck

Our school district has a list of all the carb counts for the lunch meals that I receive monthly from the school nurse. However, Cameron has always packed as I just find it easier and he likes it (for now, anyway! ;))

I'm sure under the law they MUST provide you with this info. Definitely check with whoever is in charge of the school district food service.

Good luck!!

Well after a couple years of fighting and battling with our school system upon recommendation of medical personnel we decided to carry lunchs.

The Princ and the Couns at the schools told me they were ashamed of what gets fed to the children these days and carry their own to keep from having to eat it.
