View Full Version : hives and Novolog?

My son has developed a case of hives, 2 days after returning from D camp (maybe he is allergic to his parents!). I have a pediatric appointment this afternoon, but I was wondering if there is any reason to suspect a reaction to insulin. He uses novolog for his pump, and was on novolog pens before that (since November) without problem. These hives don't itch, and are not centered around his infusion site. They seem to fade at night, but become more prominent in the morning.

My guess (hope!) is that its totally unrelated to the diabetes. Any thoughts or experiences with this?

Thanks!
Camille

I don't think it's related to the Novolog or most likely it would have presented right away. My daughter is allergic to insulin - the insulin does work but it's hard to keep her on an even keel since her body wants to reject it sometimes. She was started on NPH pens and got one large hive at every injection spot from day one. Switched to Lantus and Novolog and still got the hive at every single injection. Five mths later went to the pump and that did help. So it'd be my thought that if it were the insulin you'd have seen it right away.

Two weeks ago I broke out into a case of hives myself - all over. I went to ER and they suspected a food or environmental thing (maybe your son was exposed to something at camp). They told me it may take up to 2 weeks to go away. I was giving Prednasone oral steriod to keep the immune reaction down and by day 3 they were gone. They also told me it could be some sort of virus going on inside.

Hope that helps some and that the doc gave you some help also.

It took me years to figure this out. I am allergic to motrin, ibprophine, advil, whatever you want to call it, it is all the same stuff. Anyhow when I take these I present as being allergic to the sun. I break out in huge hives from sunlight. I'd suggest having the hives biopsied if they don't go away. Good luck, and let us know. Thanks for the input. The doctor said the same: if it were the novolog, it probably would have been sooner. And if it were a reaction to a food (he had shrimp and coconut milk that day) the hives would have been more widespread. So she thinks the culprit is the shampoo he is using when he washes his hair, then lays in the tub reading. I had switched him from a separate organic shampoo and conditioner to Pert 2 in 1 to save him shower time. Seems he's sensitive to the chemicals! Hope thats all it is.
Cheers.
