View Full Version : Will the airport metal detector hurt her pump?

So Samantha went to San Diego this weekend with her dad ans some friends. In preparation for her travel with her dad I pulled a bunch of info off of the TSA website about traveling with D. It included the procedure for going through security with a pump. I sent her dad all of the information so he would make sure and have it all for the trip. I know that she can't put her pump on the belt to go through the xray, but I was also under the impression that she shouldn't go through the walk through metal detector. The TSA gave specific instructions about how to handle not going through the metal detector. I shared this with Sam's dad and asked that he follow it and make sure her pump was protected through the security process. Samantha and I also went over it too. So, when it came time to go through the metal detector, Samantha told the TSA guy that she couldn't because she was wearing an insulin pump. The TSA officer said she "had to" go through and her dad did not intervene, in fact he told her to just go through.
So, my question is do I need to be worried about the metal detector somehow damaging her pump? If it isn't an issue then I won't worry about it and will know going forward that it isn't a big deal. But if there is an issue, then I need to figure out what to do about it.
Thanks for the help!

when we flew a few months ago, I too was under the impression that kaylee's pump couldn't go threw the metal detector too.. I told the screener she needed to be hand wanded and she said its the same thing.. My DH said the metal detector wouldn't hurt it.. the x-ray machine would (on the belt)... we haven't had any issues with kaylee's pump and its been a few months:)
when you walk into most stores there are now metal detectors, same type of thing.. I'm sure her pump is fine:)

Have you tried calling the Manuf. of your pump? What did they say??

Julia has been through a metal detector a few times this summer. She can't have it on during an x ray type procedure, but they are two separate things, so I wouldn't worry about the metal detectors. Just make sure that you explain what it is before hand so that they don't ask what that is attached to your child in a hysterical manner.

Nope I just looked in the manual and sadly it says nothing about either the x-ray belt or the metal detector (although later on in another section it does say that it cannot be worn for an x-ray). I will give them a call tomorrow. So far the pump seems to be functioning normally.

The metal detector is 100% not a problem at all. In extremely rare cases. an x-ray could mess up a pump, but really, it's almost a therotical occurance, not a real potential.
Don't worry about it unless you detect a malfunction.

We flew to GA then FL and back home last month. Went through the metal detectors each time and the pump was just fine. :)

My son has gone throught the metal detector several times with no problems. It is the X-ray machine that is the problem, not th metal detector.

William goes through the metal detectors at the airport. If his pump sets one off then they hand wand him. No problems.

Carson's always gone through a metal detector at an airport with no problems. It's never set it off and he's never been "frisked" either. I've never had to deal with diabetes issues either at security.
