Has anyone tried this yet? We just tried it today for the first time and my daughter says it hurts more than her usual short needle syringe. The pen uses a shorter needle than the syringe so it seems to me like it should hurt LESS?? She is eight and very dramatic at times, so am hoping someone out there might have experience with this pen they could share

We have one. My daughter didn't complain much about the pain any more than the regular syringe. BUT, because you have to hold it in longer to ensure the insulin gets in, perhaps that was bothering her. Maybe because you have to push on the end to release the insulin, that was putting pressure she wasn't used to. Just a couple of thoughts.

Pens hurt more sometimes because of the weight of the pen. I find that the pen hurts more than syringes do in my arms, and less than syringes elsewhere.

Thanks for your replies. I think the difference is possibly pressure and the weight of the pen. Also, its kind of awkward at first, after some practice I think it would get better. She wouldn't have anything to do with it today, so we are back to vials and syringes. Too bad--the pen is a great idea for injections at school. We are adjusting to a new regimen (Lantus and Humalog) so that means more shots a day than the previous NPH and R. Gotta get that A1c down!

Our endo suggested that if we used 8 mm needles instead of 5 mm needles it would hurt less because the longer needle getting all the way throught the skin instead of injecting into the base of the skin where there were more pain recepters. Maybe going back the the same length needle as before would help.

That's a thought. Maybe I will try to track down some 8mm pen needles today!
