View Full Version : I think high school is going to be great
Had DS's 504 meeting today. They just took what I asked for and put it on their form. No questions, no problem, easy.
Then I peeked into the health office. They have a nice, private area for kids to do what they need to and take care of their diabetes. I guess the upside and downside is that by the time your kids get to high school the staff is much more accustomed to dealing with kids with diabetes:) There are just so many more CWD:(

That is awesome! Congrats. I hope it is nice and smooth for you guys. One less thing to deal with in all the HS chaos.
Our ped told us today that there is a school in a neighboring town that has 5 kids with D and the principal also has T1D. I don't know how prepared our local HS is. I asked a couple of the moms and they didn't know anyone with D there. I have one more year before we deal with it and make decisions.

If on a pump, I would imagine that most high school students with diabetes don't go to the health clinic at all.
Amy,
True: Carter has not gone there the last year of Middle School either. But sometimes if he needs to change a set or feels gross for some reason he ends up there to check things out. Better he has a space to go to that is not a public school restroom.

I guess my statement was a little short, but yes, to have a room to take care of diabetes business is quite nice and it is good of the school to provide the space.

HS has been great with Kayla. Since she is newly dx.. just over a year, they do like to see her at least once a day, but it isn't required. Towards the end of the year she wasn't going at all and the nurse called me the first day it happened and I said it was fine. They only see a handful of all the D kids in the high school. Kayla's school is large, close to 3,000 kids, they were awesome with her 504 as well. Plus the HS nurse was also Kayla's elem nurse (before D) then her middle school nurse and then took a job at her HS her freshman year.. we joke with her that she is stalking Kayla.
Of course then we have a day like today which makes me question his "independence." Decided to correct and play football when he was in upper 300s instead of check his site (which was later found to be leaking). And did not check ketones or call me or follow what he is supposed to do when that high. Site had failed---luckily it was a short blip of highs then back to normal with new site but he will have to make up a missed Math test on Monday.
When, oh when do they develop the ability to think ahead and PREVENT issues rather than wait for them to happen?

Not at 13, I tell you. You have a few years of this sort of management.
Thanks Amy! I guess it is healthy that he probably thinks about his diabetes less than I do, right?
