Hi,
I'm back. I lurk often, but post only occasionally.
How did you know the honeymoon was over?? What was the change in insulin?? Grace has been running consistently high. At first we thought it was cold/virus. And she did even out. But then she started going high again. We upped her lantus from 4 1/5 to 5 1/5 and then gave 6 last night. Not sure how much more to increase. Waiting for call from endo so I thought I'd get your educated opinions. Thanks

Hi Karen
I can relate completely. Megan was diagnosed 2/1/07 and had really good numbers (more or less) till late last week. Almost every mealtime check is out of range lately and we've been correcting and increasing lantus too. Just seems like it is sputtering more than jumping out of the honeymoon...

Grace is high all the time, lately. Can't really even get her in range with correction. She gets her lantus at 7:30 pm. Waking # was 269 this morning. It seems like we'll have 2 numbers in range then nothing under 175. Best number today-269. Yesterday we had a 152, but everything else has been over 200. She used to run 90-120 pre meal. And now it seems like she's getting used to the highs:eek: At least there are no ketones. ever.

How old is the Lantus?
When my son was on Lantus, I noticed it was less effective about 25 days after opening. I always noticed lower sugars on a new bottle. I noticed that I had to treat the bottle very delicately. You don't need to do this, but it worked for me to keep the Lantus in the fridge and take it out only for the moment to fill the syringe. I let the syringe wam up a bit before injecting. I never took the bottle with me, unless I was leaving for several days.
Try a new bottle before going up much more.

My ped. endo told me that we will know when Deacon is coming out of the honeymoon when his wake-up numbers go higher. We will stop seeing lows and see numbers in the 200's and 300's.

Tony was getting highs at 2am, I felt like I was constantly on the emergency line. I think after that happened for about 5 days with more highs during the days they made it official.

The "honeymoon" doesn't just end in a big fight, break up and quickly divorce.
If it did we could at least sleep.
NOOooo.. it goes out in fits and spurts and big numbers and crazy days, sometimes it seems like things are going just fine, everyone is getting along and BAM, lunatic numbers. I don't need it when the meter gets all personable and tries to be friendly by saying "HI."

Rough rule of thumb for full onset, you using about 1 unit per kilo of weight

Is that Basal or Bolus or combined? I've seen that before and I'm curious

The general rule is the honeymoon is over when the total amount of all insulns given is more than 1 unit per kilo of weight.
My son had no marked end of his honeymoon -- his needs gradually rose and keep changing to this day.

Barbara I am having the exact same problem. The last 2 weeks Christian has been high sometimes all day then in the morning or afternoon or right before he goes to bed. It is so frustrating.
Sorry I am no help on this one.

I knew the honeymoon was over when Bethany was dx 5 months ago....
Sorry, can't help you but I thought a little joke would bring a smile.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, I think that is not accurate. My daughter never honeymooned. Yet she has never gone over 1 unit per kilo. My dad, who has had D for 52 years and clearly is not still honeymooning, takes less than 3/4 unit per kilo. Of course, this is a perfect example of YDMV, which brings me to ...

I also must agree with MamaBelle. The rant is hilarious! I will look forward to more of the rants.
David is only taking between 8-10 units a day. He is 40 pounds...divided by 2.2.....18 kilos. So we have a ways to go on this wonderful honeymoon....My husband said his insulin needs just gradually increased. I have seen that already with david. Just a long ways to go...

Personally, the honeymoon was over the day the hair dryer came flying at my head...oh, not THAT honeymoon...
The best we can figure is that Zach's honeymoon ended during his intense growth spurt.
I knew the honeymoon was over when Bethany was dx 5 months ago....
lol.:D very true!

He stopped buying jewelry, bringing home flowers, making dinner.....:)...but I soon learned I could buy my own jewelry, flowers, and order dinner for him to pick up.
Oh you mean the diabetes honeymoon? It was a gradual rise in insulin requirements.

I knew Phoenix was out of the honeymoon a week after dx's, his bs were in the 3-400 all the time upped his insulin and then he evened out....
Good luck I hope you get an answer from your endo....
My daughter had a lllllooooonnnnnggggg extended honeymoon that she just loved going back into. It has been a year and 1/2 now and the endo thinks maybe she is finally out. She just bumped up to 1/2 unit per kilo and has remained steady for 2 months.
We started getting crazy numbers, increased insulin, she leveled out, 2 weeks later-bam....dropped low. Then we would be back on her original dose for a few months and it would all happen again.
Every time we would talk to the endo, it was oh, she must be getting ready to come out of honeymoon...
...like I said, 1 1/2 years.

I asked the Doc about our honeymoon at our appt 2 weeks ago.
He said we wouldn't be seeing the #s we were seeing if she were in her honeymoon still.
I looked back at my charts. We are at about 8 - 9 units per day combination of Lantus and Humalog. She is about 12 kilos so we are at about 3/4 of her kilos.
My endo said just the opposite. That having her need more insulin for a week or two, then dropping back down was a sure sign we were still in honeymoon.

I agree with MamaBelle. I have a friend who has had T1D for 33 years and only takes about .65 units per kilo. I asked our Endo about it, and he felt it wasn't accurate to use the weight/units to determine end-of-honeymoon.
The only way to know FOR SURE the honeymoon is over is to have a C-Peptide drawn.

I'm sorry your seeing the higher numbers, this is just my opinion. But, I think I would start with adjusting the fastacting until she has good numbers at 3 hours after her shot. Then, I would figure out the Lantus, it's easier to try and keep the numbers good. If she is high 3 hours after dinner for example, 269, then she wakes up at 275. The lantus is still doing it's job. The goal as a background insulin is to keep them within 40 points of the starting number.
I don't know if that's what happened in your situation, it was just a random example...On the other hand, if she say 135 three hours after her dinner shot, then she's up to 250 by morning, then it is the Lantus..Normally Lantus is adjusted 1 unit at a time, but YDMV (smile)
Hope this helps
