My 11 year old daughter started using a minimed pump in April. Just started getting bad itchy rashes around the adhesive part of the infusion set. We moved to another part of her body, and immediately got another rash. Any suggestions?

If she's allergic to the adhesive, you could always try putting another tape (like IV 3000) on the skin first, and then inserting the set through that, so the infusion set adhesive never touches the skin.

Strange thing is - we were using the pump for 3 months before it started rashing.

Jess has been getting a minor rash under her sites after swimming in our pool. I am guessing the chlorine soaks the fabric part of the site and her skin reacts. Just a thought.

Brandon uses the quicksets from MM, too. He is also getting the rashes. I think it is from swimming so much, and his skin is getting really dry. We've been using Aveeno lotion daily & it has helped so much. Hopefully we won't have to deal with this all year round! He said he's tired of being 'greased up' with lotions...BOYS!

Just a thought,
have you changed your skin prep? also, they may have changed their glue and you'd never know. GLues are made in big vats so it could be slightly different and you'd never know (i have a husband that manufactures glues and inks so I know how different batches can be).

Could just be a simple heat rash as well. Sarah was getting them under her infusion sites for a while, when it was really hot. I thought she was having allergic reactions and changed all kinds of things, until I realized that she was only getting them in the hot weather!

I think I've developed a sensitivity to adhesives since dx- I wore a ton of bandaids right around dx with no problem, but these days even a bandaid can provoke swelling. Some things a lot of exposure to will provoke sensitivities.

Derek has very sinsitive skin. He struggled with red irriation and itching from the first infusion set we put in him, even if we used the IV3000 stuff. Our trainer suggested that we start using Benydril spray, an antihistamine to reduce itching and irritation of bug bites and poison oak. Our trainer had ben using it for years to complete success on herself. It is tacky until it dries completely, so you don't need to use IV prep, just alcohol wipes to prep the site.
The Benydril spray is working great for us. We just wipe the site with alcohol, give one pump of the benydril spray, let it dry for a minute or two, until tacky or a little drier, but not completely dry. Then put put in the set. No more rash or itchieness and no more sites coming loose.
Good luck.

My daughter developed a really bad reaction to the adhesive 3 months after the pump start. We tried IV 3000, Tegaderm and the Benadryl spray without any luck. We are now using Opsite Flexifix under the Pod. I found it on Amazon.com and it comes in a roll and you cut the size you need. It is working great for her - no problems so far with intense itching. And it stays on in the pool great.
