View Full Version : How often is your child low?

I know all children are different and have different targets but I am curious of the frequency of lows and highs of other children and where we fall.

How often (on average) does your child have a BG number below 80?
How often (on average) does your child have a BG number above 200?

We average about 1 "low" per day and about 1 "high" above 250 per day.

we typically have at least 1 low a day (usually more than that) and more than 1 high a day.. today, I think she had three.. but we were at A York's wild kingdom. it was crazy hot.. difficult to control to say the least!

Since starting CGMS we don't really have anything lower than 80, although I don't always check his actual bs. We don't prebolus so we tend to go around 250 with meals, but I am able to look at it every 5 minutes!

Before or without CGMS we would be over 250 a few times a day. Lower than 80, maybe once a day. Hard to say on average though.

We have lows once a day or every other day

We have at least one reading over 250 each day - for a while it was better than that but right now, at least one over 300 a day.

We are constantly changing regimans so it is hard to say exactly but we average with the newest change low at least 2 times a night from karate(5 days a week), but high over 250(normally over 300) in the middle of the night until breakfast.
Still trying to find happy mediums for correction numbers, basals and boluses.

It depends on the day. This week as soon as I get the ratio set she is good for a day then goes higher. I think she must be growing because she has eaten more then her dad and I all week long. Just correct, tweek and move on I guess.

Normally she will go low 1 or 2 times a day. I know she goes high after a meal, but unless I think there is an issue I don't check for at least 2 hours post so I am not sure how high she goes. I've seen her in the lower 200s post meal, but that was on pizza night, so not to shabby.

I think one of the huge factors also is there is a big difference in 60 and 20, and a huge difference between 210, and 400. The tighter I can get those swings the better.

It depends. She can go 5 or 6 days without a low and then have an entire day of lows. I'd say on average it is maybe every other day for a low. Same thing for a high.

You probably have seen me post before. I am the one whose son had a seizure in the middle of the night despite all of my viligiant night checks. When we left the hospital, the endocronologist asked me how many times Colby had lows during the day. Well I answered similiar to your posts but was made to feel like the seizure was my fault. After reading your posts, I feel so much better in that I thought I was the only one experienceing a low with my son once a day. I am at the point where I need a new endocronologist or we are just working on our own. We have since gotten a CGMS eventhough they told me not to. It has been very helpful. Thanks for the reassurance.

right now up to 3 a day and not to happy about it. I can't get help with it. We either give to much insulin or not enough. But the summer is almost over and I expect it to even out (I hope)

wow, I do feel better about Zech's lows. He has about 1 a day, occasionally we may get up to 3, but knowing I'm not the only one is reassuring.

He has a low every couple of days, and it's usually around 50 before I notice him acting kind of weird. The other day he had a low of 34, just a minute before he was smiling and acting great-so scary! Over this last weekend he had tons of lows from excitement, his favorite grandma was here that he hasn't seen in 4 months-she felt awful for that!
High about 1-2x a day.

This is a great thread, thanks for starting it!

We seem to be averaging about 1 low a day and maybe 1 bad low a week. Which a bad low I consider under 60. And highs, well, if we're a the pool we seem to have 2 or 3 a day, if we're not at the pool we don't have many if any. Summer throws us off. My favorite time of the year which used to be so carefree has turned on me since D came here. Oh well, live and learn, by the time I have it figured out it'll be labor day and we'll be at school and changing rates cause of that,,,, And I always try to err on running on the higher side then risking lows. But those darn lows are SO close to perfect numbers. 60 is just on the other side of 70.

But I'm so glad to see how everyone elses day seems to fall. Makes me feel less alone.

We get a low about 4-5x a week. They are almost always when he wakes up. We had a few days of all-day lows recently. I believe it was because of a growth spurt since he was ravenous as well. In the past 5 months, I have learned that the lows and being ravenous are a sign that he is about to grow again. He grew 2 inches and gained 2 1/2 pounds in the 3 months between endo visits.

We get about 4 lows a week....but then again, I do not consider 80 to be low (without any IOB, of course)! I think that you tend to get a feel if your kid is going to drop any more or not so I am comfortable with him in the 80's. Lately we have had a lot of highs, but we a very quick to correct so he does not stay high for very long......

She is not often low...a pattern has developed before lunch when she is low (55-60) but we are adjusting her BF I/C ratio. She has been high in about 2-3 out of 12 readings but we have now perfected the basals (as close as possible to perfection ;)) and she is not high often anymore. Maybe once a day, if that. Thank goodness she is never low at night, I hear horror stories here!

Wow, I thought I was missing something with the lows...we have had some times where things were just right for a month. Amazingly. But recently we are having at least a low a day, activity has been crazy and its so hard to tell if you adjust ratio/bolus for the activity or wait and see  Usually one number over high 250's each week.

4 or so a week.
I don't count 70-80 low tho.. We'll treat it if it's not premeal.

We've rarely had a REAL low low since we stopped NPH years ago. We may have a 50 or so once every two weeks. Lowest ever was 36 (at 11:00 am, guess what insulin...) Lowest MDI/pump was 44.

Ethan is low at least 2-3 times a day. Usually in the early afternoon and the evening. in the last couple of weeks he has been in the 40-50's:eek:. Pretty scary.

No lows this week (so far), about 6 last week and I don't know why  I haven't changed anything.

2 lows per week.
Just pumping since 7/10/07 so doing a lot of tweaking on basals--1-2 highs above 250/day.
The responses to this thread sure reinforces the fact that Diabetes is ever changing. Just when you think you've got it right you need to start adjusting all over again.

Below 70, which is the bottom end of Sarah's target range, a couple of times a week. In the 70's or 80's about once or twice a day. She's above 200 once a day, sometimes twice. Sarah's 10 and was dx'd 11 months ago. From what I've been told, a few lows a week isn't a "failure"- it's to be expected when you have tight control.

Today we had six lows. SIX!?!?! She was very active this weekend at her dad's and had several lows then. It all just carried over to today. Of course tonight she hasn't been out of the 300s. Thank god for the good BG days, if every day was like today, I'd lose it.
