hi-
riley has a stomach bug with diarrhea and not wanting to eat. she was 0.2 blood ketones last night but 1.3 now. how does that relate to urine ketones, like about moderate? (our endo goes by urine, and all the cotton balls in her diaper are full of poop so we can't tell that way.) looks like a trip to the ER is coming our way...

If you are using precision, here's a chart (scroll down below), I'm not sure if there's any other ones that measure blood ketones

I hope she gets better!

Urine ketones lag several hours behind, so blood ketones are much better and more accurate.

I view anything in the .6-1.5 range to be moderate anything over 1.5 large. Fortunately, the highest we've ever gone on blood ketones is 1.8. There really isn't a small or trace with blood ketones. I have noticed that when my daughter's urine ketones read small, she is typically around .4 to .5 on the meter. Not that this is accurate since you have a lag with urine ketones.

I've been told to call the emergency line for directions if it's over 1.4, that's when I have to give extra insulin-that was happening a few weeks ago unfortunately!

How's Riley doing? How are you holding up?

You may eventually want to send the Precision Xtra Abbott rep to the ped endos office to educate the doctor on the validity of blood ketone testing :D.

how is she doing now.. if those ketones stay in the 1.5 range or go higher I'd call the dr.. I would definitely get someone to educate your dr like Ellen suggested:)

Hope all is well now!

hey everyone,
thanks for the replies. we did end up going to the ER sunday and she was admitted for dehydration/gastroenteritis. came home yesterday and thought things were better but doesn't want to eat again....grrrr...
we're off to the pedi this afternoon.
yes, i agree, these endos need to be trained on the precision blood ketone meter! it is so much easier to use and much more accurate. the hospital we were at didn't use them either!
thanks,
jessica

I'm sorry to hear Riley's sick! :( Did you start the pump on the 20th as planned? If so, I hope the pump was a little help with the sickness (being able to use temp basals, and not so many shots being ill)

Did you try fun things to eat like a snow cone (helps with dehydration)? Or small things like a sucker, or hard candy?!
I'm glad to hear you're home, and I hope things start improving!
I'll be thinking of you!

thanks lanae!
yup, we did start on the 20th. it was great timing, because we have had to reduce basals a lot, and in some cases stop it for an hour or two.
just got back from the pedi, 102.9 fever and it looks like croup? what?? ahhhhhh! said it looks unrelated to the stomach bug and probably something else we picked up in the hospital. i hate this!!!!
yeah my husband is at the grocery story now buying anything we think we might be able to get in her!
thanks for thinking of us!
