What was your child's first A1c?
Just got a call from the clinic and her A1c was 5.3 but her pancreas is only putting out 0.2 of insulin which is too small of an amount for her being only 2.
We have an appt. on the 25th and I am to continue taking her bgs until then. Her numbers creeped up a little today.

A's first A1c was 5.4%, which was considered normal range/honeymoon.

Emma's first A1C was 8.4, but her BG was already over 700 at dx.
Her insulin production must have stopped pretty suddenly, because she only had symptoms for a couple of days prior to dx.

Zach was similar. His first was 9.2 and BG dx @ 590. His symptoms were quick as well. Less than a week.

Davis's first A1c was 11. I know now that was really high but I had taken him to the dr several times and he never tested him for anything so I didn't know. Now looking back he had been showing symptoms for a while.

Braden's A1C was 9.6. He had been showing symptoms for a while, but those symptoms coincided with the start of kindergarten. When he was diagnosed, I really beat myself up over not taking him to the doctor sooner.

Ben's first A1c was almost 10.
He was only 7 months old and hadn't had sypmtoms for very long. Maybe 3 days or so. He is our first and we were obsessed with him and took him to a doc the second we noticed he was a little off. After 3 different docs told us it was a virus, we went to Casualty and were told he wouldn't survive the night.
He was small. It was awful and his A1c's only improved when he started pumping aged 14 months. Since pumping they have always been in and around the 7.5 mark.

Our first A1C last month was 5.6...but since then DS's numbers have been creeping up and we are needing to adjust his insulin for the first time. His numbers were over 600 at DX.

Our first A1C was in the 8's I think 8.3 and she was diagnosed a week ago, she showed symptoms for 2 days, we were always watched them like halks because my husband is type 1. She was in the high 500's when we brought her to the ER.

See, this is what I am not understanding. When we took her to the ER last Friday her bg's were 387, 28 and 240 and 3+ glucose and 2+ ketones in her urine. Now we find out her A1c was 5.3 and yet they are saying she is not diabetic or at least not yet but has a higher potential to be heading that way. Plus with her pancreas only producing 0.2 insulin???
Her fasting this morning was 120 and 140 after bf. Her numbers are higher than mine and I am a T1!!
They told me to call in to the clinic with her numbers every 2 days. And her appt was set for the 25th. I have not restricted any food from her. B/c I figure if she is not diabetic then her numbers should not rise up. So I am letting her eat normal. That doesn't mean lots of sugar or carbs...b/c we don't eat that way to begin with.
Can anyone relate with me????

It's awful, I can't remember her # with that first A1C in the Hospital. I know it was a high one like in the 9's or 10's. Fi was in DKA and close to death with a BG of 700 when we were rushed to the Children's Hospital, which we will be comming up on our fifth anniversary in August. Fi, had been showing signs for at least a month. I still feel so stupid that I did not catch things sooner, but than again neither did her doctor.

That first week was such a blur (I still had to work while my husband was with Austin in the hospital) We just had an A1C on Tuesday and it was 6.9

Ryan's A1c was 9.3 at dx and his random glucose was 18.3 (330) and barely showing trace ketones on pee stick. I think it was .6 blood ketones, which they said was negative. He was showing no other outward signs except for peeing more. His diagnosis also coincided with starting kindergarten and thats why I think I didn't really take notice of the other symptoms. He was a little grumpier, more tired and because I hadn't checked his weight recently did not notice that he had dropped 5 lbs. I noticed his pants fitting looser, but not extremely. All the other symptoms could have been attributable to starting school because he was way more active therefore being more tired/grumpy and the weight loss. He wasn't drinking more at home and the dayhome lady, who has taken care of him since he was 6 mos old, said he wasn't drinking more at her house.
I can't remember whom I heard it from or where I read it, but don't some really early signs of diabetes show your blood sugar going up and then going down really low because your pancreas finally spews out some insulin and then you go high again - yoyo like?
Regge,
Did they do any other tests on your baby to see if she has any of the antibodies? What about MODY, which they have identified in a few infants.

I don't know what MODY is? Yes they did antibodies and c-peptide (not sure if that is the same) heck, I don't even know my own numbers except my bg's! LOL But all the tests came back normal except for the output of insulin from her pancreas and it was 0.2

Regge,
Click on the link on my previous reply to find out about MODY. The C-peptide I believe indicates whether your body is producing insulin or not. If the number is high it means your body is making a lot of insulin - usually the case in a person with T2, but is insulin resistant. A person who makes no insulin at all (like me) will not have no C-peptides either.
