I live in Canada.

Our insurance company is willing to cover $5,000 toward the cost of an insulin pump

My question is how much more will we have to pay?

How much does an insulin pump cost?

We really want this for our 2 1/2 year old son.

I think our Cozmo pump was around $5500 give or take a few hundred :) . Make sure that your insurance will cover the cost of supplies. I believe our supplies for just the pump run around $300 a month. That doesn't include test strips, insulin, and emla cream. It's just the pump stuff. I hope it works for you to get a pump -- Carson loves his!

I'm not sure how much the Animas costs, but the Minimed 515 was about $6200 list price. I'm not sure if there is a different contracted price with the insurance company involved. Our insurance covered it, but I have not seen a statement to see how much they paid. Good luck. We haven't actually started pumping yet, but are counting down the days!

Hi there,

We're in Canada and just bought at Animas 1200 for our son (I think the 1250 is supposed to be available here in June).

It cost $6500, and another $500 in start-up supplies. The supplies (for any pump) are quite expensive so you should definitely check how much your insurance will cover. If cost is going to be an issue for you, check out diabetesdepot.com. This guy who runs this pharmacy service lives near me so I have met him and he is really a good guy -- a pharmacist, diabetes educator and diabetic himself. Anyway, his prices for supplies seem to be quite a bit less than ordering them from the pump companies or most regular pharmacies.

Good luck -- we really like the Animas. Hope you do too.

HI
contact animas.. they can get an ok from you to contact your insurance ( no obligation) adn price it for you with your insurance... We did and it came back our durable medical ( usually what a pump claim is under is covered at 90% cost.. so we where supposed to pay 10% however when all was said adn done my insuracen paid for it out right,... no cost to us :D )

But generally i think it cost somewhere around the 5k to 6k range.. my insurance ( like many others) will have a contracted cost amount with the pump company at a drastically reduced rate.. mine was $4800.. So we where supposed to pay 10% of that amount...

hope this helps..

btw
we love the animas pump... we have been on it for 2 months now for my 5 year old daughter

Animas actually does something rather interesting with financial assistance. My insurance only covered 90% of my IR1250. I spoke with the Animas Rep about financial assistance this and that, they had me send in proof that I didn't make a lot of money, as well as my mother(college student, still under age of 24, mom is my only source of income and insurance right now). But anyway, depending on what you make/dependants and all, they will help with initial costs. I didn't have to pay anything, my insurance covered 90% of 7000.xx, Animas wrote off the rest, or however they do it. I live in the US, I'm not sure if they do this kind of program in any other country, but best thing to do is ask, it's worth a shot(Yeah, bad, I know).
