I've got 16 people for dinner. Now what to serve?

We are doing an assortment of casseroles. I'm bringing a chicken casserole, my sis is bringing an enchilada casserole and my mom is making Lasagna. Plus, we are going to have a corn salad, a veggie tray, and a few other side dishes.

Being as busy as you are Joy, you should ask that people bring a favorite dish to share:) People love to show off their famous recipes over the holidays. I love making a big pan of au gratin potatoes with lots of cheese and bacon sprinkled over all. I will also be bringing a lasagna to my brothers house and green beans amondine to my SIL's house.

I am making a big crockpot of Veggie/Beef soup, and everyone else is kinda bringing side things...as in, things to make deli sandwiches, bacon/cheddar potato wedges, bagel bites, veggie pizza, fruit pizza, and things like that. We also have one person bringing a couple pies.

Our second thing to do on Christmas day, I am taking 2 small desserts. My mom is making a ham, mashed taters, devilled eggs, and things like that.

We have a small crowd, so we are doing something I've been dying to do for years. Tenderloin of beef. My mom is making twice baked potatoes. Then an assortment of veggies.

We'll do a bunch of appetizers around 1 since we have people coming from out of town and staying overnight. Then around 6 we'll do our big meal.

Can you get everyone to bring a dish and you do a main? Turkey, roast beef or ham are always easy. Or a big pan of lasagna...

If it were at MY house we'd be having a fresh green salad with grapefruit and feta, homemade dinner rolls served with homemade jam, a nice Christmas ham, roasted vegetables (potatoes, carrots, parsnips, onions), and at least 2 desserts one being pecan pie.

I love to do holiday dinners but if you don't I would throw the ham in the oven and ask everyone to bring something. I'm always more than willing to bring something to a dinner even if it's just a veggie tray!

We just snack all day long. My mom makes her world famous dinner rolls (a meal in itself) and my dad goes to the marina in the morning to purchase fresh caught live crab. After we cook the crab we spread the table with newspaper and we all sit and crack crab. I am quite the popular person at this time because I don't eat seafood, but I LOVE to crack crab and usually end up with a beautiful pile of crab that I ration out.

I love the idea of everyone bringing their favorite dish to share - you'll end up with some fantastic, eclectic dishes.

We are at my parents. No one likes turkey, LOL, so last year she made lasagna. My 7 year old only wants shrimp, puppy chow, and lots of egg nog.....which is probably what he'll get!

spiral sliced ham (love those! pre-cooked, just heat & eat)
loaded mashed potatoes- in the freezer
maple glazed sweet potatoes- in the freezer
salad
homemade noodles
stuffing muffins
assortment of cookies- also in the freezer
Grandma's bringing pies & pretzel salad

(hopefully:p) Cinnamon rolls are going in the freezer today for Christmas morning breakfast.

We pretty much have an open house all day. I prepare a big meal for lunch, we keep cookie, veggie, cheese and cracker trays out most of the day for those that are coming and going, and then pull out leftovers for an evening meal.

Puppy chow? Hmm, don't think I can find that in Calorie King... do you have a carb count?;)

For us it's 20 carbs for 1/3 cup or 28 grams.

For the big family dinner on Wednesday, we're going to the Mexican restaurant down the street...Christmas day we're thinking about grilling chicken and porkchops or maybe doing something like gumbo or tortilla soup. We had so much left over from Thanksgiving that no one wants to even THINK about going the turkey route.

Well, I am going to be different and no help at all, but just in case you feel like it...

We are having a family Bbq. Everyone brings a salad, some meat and a dessert and we all share.

Mind you, we are expecting 26 celsius (about 79)!:D

Oh, I am so envious! We are having individual cornish hens, baked sweet potatoes, apple walnut and cornbread dressing, baby carrots. Easy to fix, everything goes in the oven at the same time. One year it was lasagna and that was a hit. Another year was all hors doerves and that was fun.

I cannot imagine having 16 people for dinner.

As usual, it'll just be the 4 of us (ok, make that 6, with the dogs watching us with those begging eyes:rolleyes:). Our dinner will be mimosa eggs (ETA: should read eggs mimosa aka deviled eggs) and a smoked fish starter with green salad, then main course will be various meats to be grilled on the spot on the stone, and a side of basmati rice and various raw vegies. Dessert will most likely be the traditional "buche" (like a yule log cake, except we get the ice-cream version:D).

Most likely with a lot of bah-humbugging about how we'll be glad when the holidays are over, though we say this without the kids hearing. Don't want to influence their innocent spirits with our decrepit cynic souls.

Happy Holidays, everyone!:D

We will roast a fore-rib of beef, yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and parsnips, steamed sprouts, brocolli and carrots, horseradish sauce, english mustard and pan juice gravy :)

After that will be the Christmas pudding which I made back in November, brandy butter, mince pies and cream :D

.

That's about what we do but we never measure it. I am an expert "guesstimater" when it comes to carbs. When it comes to super sweet stuff we bolus for about 30% more than we think we need to and watch the CGMS closely.

That's our family tradition too, and my favorite meal! :)

We usually do the bring a dish thing too. I'm bringing spinach ball appetizers this year. It's a nice side or appetizer, and you can make them in advance and freeze them. You just put them in the oven on a cookie sheet straight out of the oven for 20 minutes at 375 degrees. I like them so much that we had our caterer make them for our wedding. If you'd like the recipe, I'd be happy to share.

You are very nice to host all those people for dinner!

Jealous here too, but for the opposite reason than others I suspect! We're forecast for 38 degrees celsius here (about 105 fahrenheit) in Perth, Australia. :( Yuck.

Now that is too hot for me. The 26 is bad enough - it doesn't seem hot to most but coupled with the 97% humidity like we had today, it actually makes it feel hotter than Asia, apparently.:( (We've been to Asia and can vouch that the humidity here is horrible!)

As I write, it is 10pm, 21 degrees and 99% humidity. Another night sleeping with the windows open!:(

I am doing Christmas eve dinner and I believe its just for us 5. We are having ham, au gratin potatoes, cream peas, and "the salad". Its a weird salad my mom always made that her family always made on holidays. My hubby calls it "the salad". Oh and rolls.
