I just went to this site and signed up for the Walk for a Cure for this year. I also signed up to start getting donations. You can make a donation page and send donation e-mails to friends and family to get them to donate and to send on to their friends and family. Not sure how many other people have taken action on this but I hope you all know that you can join it and start your own project of getting donations. I plan on taking it to local stores around me and the surrounding area. Hoping that when school starts we can hold fundraisers for this to help find that Cure we are all Praying for. Website is www.jdrf.org. If you would like to look or make a donation please do. Thanks. Feel free to check mine out under Angelique in WA state.

Hi!!!
We have walked the past 4 years and are gearing up for this years as well. Cool that you are in Washington we are also. We live in Vancouver and will be walking on Sept. 30 at Oaks Park. Will you be doing the Portland or Seattle walk?

We will be in the Spokane walk,on the 29th. Our son is really looking forward to it. When he saw the commercial on tv in the hospital and jumped up and said we need to join that right now!:D I loved it he wants to get involed with all the things about diabetes.

We did the walk this year in Northern Virginia for the first time. It will be an annual event for our family now (rain or shine - it WAS raining this year).

I'm also getting involved with local volunteer opportunities and advocacy opportunities. The benefit of living near DC is having access to people who can make decisions. I will happily go talk to anyone about ways to make diabetes easier for our children and work for a cure.

We did the walk last year and will again this year, but I have to admit I have a TERRIBLE time asking people for money! I don't know why, but it embarrasses me for some reason. We send out letters and ask that way. I always feel very emotional about it and I was hurt last year when a few friends chose not to donate (friends who were not in financial need, either). But others donated more than I imagined, so it all worked out I suppose.

I'm on the walk committee for our local walk along with Kaylee's mom. Our walk is Sep. 30, and hopefully the weather will be better than last year (it was a washout!). Our team raised almost $4500, and we hope to raise even more this year.

It's a great event. Abby is excited because they've been showing the walk commercial on Cartoon Network lately and Scooby Doo is the walk mascot:D

My mom actually doesn't speak to one of her friends anymore because of this. This person has loads of money and is always hitting my mom and dad up for donations to the various charities she works with (none of which she has a personal connection to). My parents always donated to her causes, but when it was time for the JDRF walk she chose not to do the same. It made my mom so angry that they are no longer friends. It wasn't like we were asking for hundreds of dollars, five or ten would have been great.

I used to have an issue with asking for money, but I was the chairperson of my daughter's school's silent auction committee last year, so that required me to get over it real fast. Turns out a lot of people are very willing to pitch in and help out.

We have done the walk here in the Charlotte area (we have 3 locations) for the last two years. We've been real lucky with the letters that we have sent out. Some people give and some don't. I always ask that if someone cannot give, to please keep our family and the walk in their thoughts and prayers.

My brother lives in Charlotte and his law firm was actively involved in fundraising for the Charlotte walk - they raised over $30K. He also helps a teenage boy organize a lacrosse tournament to raise funds because the teenager's younger sister is Type 1!!

Tell him "thank you" from us. :D We do the walk in Kannapolis since we live in Concord. The Charlotte area walks are some of the most successful in the nation.

Oh, I think I'd like to do this, if I could find the local one. I have a feeling the nearest one would probably be in Tampa, or something like that. Perhaps Orlando.

What about the bicycle ride? Do any of you do that?--Jennifer and I think the one in NC would be fun to do!;)

We started out raising over $8700 the first year then $4400 the second and $2100 the third.......notice a trend? Yeah I did too. Its so hard to ask every year so the second/third years I was busy helping on the committee and I never really found my place those 2 years. But this year I am actually the website manager so its not only the walk but Im updating the site year round. And I know for sure I couldnt ask for money year round.

Hi Wendy,
Not sure where you are in FL, but I know there is one in Fort Desoto. I think the ADA does one in Tampa.

We'll walk for the second year since diagnosis. I feel like it's something constructive our family and friends can do to make a difference. I feel so out of control with this dumb disease - so this helps me feel productive. I don't like asking for money though. We've actually cut back our giving at church so we can give more money to JDRF - I'm sure that's probably a controversial subject. ;)

I had posted a while back that we walked with JDRF this year for the first time.

Two weeks ago, I became the Recruitment Leader for the Capital Chapter of JDRF. This is involved with Gov't Relations and I am responsible for recruiting more people who are willing to write or call their congressional rep when there is important diabetes legislation in Congress.

We have also launched our campaign called "Promise to Remember Me" to push for an increase in funding and renewal of the Special Diabetes program in Congress. We want to hold 400 meetings with Representatives across the country. Every chapter of JDRF is participating.

If you are willing to speak to your representatives and/or would like to attend a meeting, please go to the JDRF site and sign up.

The address is: http://promise.jdrf.org/

Even if you don't want to sign up, this is a great site to see what is going on with this campaign!
